My husband just had the Big V last week and had to get my permission/signature. We're in Illinois & apparently it has the highest percentage of malpractice lawsuits, so that could be one reason.

When we asked the doc why he needed my permission he said in so many words that it's because many wives change their husband's minds & force their husbands to get a reversal. I had him clarify-these men were not pre-snipped before marriage-it was a mutual decision between 2 married people to begin with. He said a reversal is more invasive, expensive & not always going to work. What made me ticked was that the doc said the wives claimed their husbands "forced" these wives into agreeing to a V at first.

I told the doc I won't be falling into that demographic-thank you very much. These women are liars if you ask me. How manipulative they must be to suddenly start playing the poor wife who's hubby put one over on them when they both decided this in the first place. I guess they were potential oopsers that had to take it a step further.

And how pitiful that their husbands go through with it for them! If I was a man, that'd end it for me.

That's completely ridiculous! Good to know, but ridiculous. I can honestly say that if Boyfriend decided today that he wants to have kids I'd be completely unwilling to budge. We have a great relationship in which compromises are sometimes necessary, BUT in the instance of whether or not to birth a child someone's life is getting ruined.

Anyway, only one doctor said that to me, and he seemed like a condescending little shit that I wouldn't WANT performing a surgery on me. Another of his wonderful lines was, "Well, you'll feel differently when you grow up and meet someone who loves you." Excuse me? What a tool!

Geez, I'd be so infuriated if a doc said that to me! Did Dr. Prick realize you already had a boyfriend, family, friends, etc, that love you right now? What are THEY-chopped liver?

And there you are-an adult seeing a doctor (paying HIS bills-no less) as opposed to a child coming in with their parent and he STILL acts so condescending! Fuck him.

You can thank breedercentric state legislators and overzealous trial attorneys for the regulations requiring spouses to be informed or to consent prior to a sterilization procedure. Many years ago, physicians routinely performed this kind of procedure, but in the aftermath of involuntary sterilizations of those with mental disorders and "social undesirables" (e.g. what poor people, people of color were termed that at that time), judges and juries took a very dim view of those types of surgeries. Lots of lawsuits, fundie (of every religion) whining and what-have-you, a number of states require a person to inform or obtain consent of their spouse prior to getting snipped.

i say its nice to be consulted, but it got nothing to do with me, if they want it, i aint fussed.. its their decision,

Right. I also think most Western gubbermints err on the side of overpopulation vs. a country of happy, productive people that have free choice over their bodies. The fundie element just makes this goal easier to accomplish so those like Dubbya hide behind it. They see all the "side effects" of unemployment, poverty, etc...as a necessary evil in order to have more than enough workers. Sounds bleak, but that's the way I see it.
