The scheduling of the protests alone should have tipped off reporters to the fact that this is about more than insurance coverage; the protests aligned with the anniversary of Griswold v. Connecticut, which is the 1965 Supreme Court decision where the court ruled in favor of Planned Parenthood's right to offer contraceptive services to married women, which had the effect of invalidating any bans on contraception sales nationwide.

I'd imagine some folks would like to pretend that's a coincidence, but that would require a massive leap of faith to believe that anti-choice activists somehow forgot an anniversary that pro-choice organizations celebrate every year. These protests are an extension of what's been a multi-year protest project from the American Life League, which holds annual anti-Griswold protests under the banner The Pill Kills. Additionally, the protests featured speakers who are unafraid to talk about the "tragedy" of women being able to choose nonprocreative sex. Sarah Posner at Salon interviewed one of the major speakers at the Capitol Hill protest, David Bereit, and while he was cagey with the liberal press about his views on legalized contraception, she found that it didn't take much digging to discover he's against it. In 2005, he directly stated that he felt Griswold created "a tragic moral breakdown in our culture," echoing common Catholic dogma about how sex should always be about procreation, even though Bereit himself isn't Catholic. He and many other speakers at the rally claimed that emergency contraception is abortion, despite the definitive disproof offered recently in the New York Times, which I argued would not be enough to shame anti-choice activists into scientific accuracy. You know, because they don't really like contraception.

(Note, this is from June. I posted it because it matters to us that many anti-abortion activists are also anti-contraception, especially with recent statements that have been made about abortion.)
If I was a young woman right now, I'd so be stocking up on condoms and anything else I could get my hands on, or getting sterilized before it's outlawed. These fuckers are gonna do everything they can to drag women back into the kitchen barefoot and keep them pregnant. It is unbelievable. If you had told me even five years ago that this kind of thing would be happening I would have said you were full of shit. This is mind-boggling. We are regressing back to the dark ages.
When I read things like this, I am yet again reminded of why I should get the ball rolling on that tubal that I want.

Yup, as a 23-year-old woman, this was a big reason I was in such a hurry to get sterilized (that and the fact that I just wanted to get it over with). I finally got it done this past summer, after 5 years of trying.

I didn't want to be at the mercy of these sadists if they eventually get their way. I wanted to be permanently and irreversibly sterile. I instructed my surgeon to burn the entire length of my tubes, and she did. The whole thing is just fucked beyond salvaging -- exactly how I want it.

Now there ain't shit they can do about it.
This shit is scary. If those fuckers had their way, every act of intercourse would produce a baby, and women would have no legal rights to their body at all.

If I were you, I'd try to get sterilized ASAP, because if Romney/Ryan get into the White House, there is a VERY GOOD chance that they'll be picking at least one Supreme Court justice. Anybody want to take a guess as to what might come up on their docket and what they'll try to reverse? angrily flogging with a whip

Folks, once they get abortion outlawed, their next target is contraceptives, make no bones about it. They do NOT want women controlling the reproductive process at all. This is all about power and control over 50% of the population.

I'm old enough to remember when abortion was easy as pie to get, and when buying birth control was as easy as going to CVS or Walgreen's and selecting what you wanted, over the counter. None of this denying women pills, none of this freedom of consience shit, which to me is just another way to control women's bodies by denying them access to needed products.

I'm sterilized, and I couldn't be happier about it. No more pregnancy scares, no more buying birth control, no more abstaining from sex during dangerous parts of the month, to be safe. No more of that shit, just to prevent an unwanted baby. I would suggest that all CF people try to get sterilized this year or next, because I don't trust the government to stay out of our bedrooms.

If they are so afraid of stuff inducing abortions, why don't they offer up the idea of reduced and super-easy-to-get sterilizations instead? No sperm ever meets an egg, thus no wringing of hands. And who cares if women have non-procreative sex? Do they get a stick of their butt whenever an infertile women sleeps with her husband? She isn't having 'procreative' sex.
Many women have probably been in my situation regarding birth control which is a combination of the following:

1)Due to certain health problems/issues, we can't take the pill or use any type of hormonal patches

2)We tried unsuccessfully for decades to locate a doctor in our area willing to perform a tubal ligation and due to insurance not covering it, the expense of travel related costs, and loss of time from work, we never made it to go stay in another state for a few days where we could get sterilized

3)Our only options for birth control for our own bodies was gels, spermicides, and suppositories and even if used correctly each and every time, even with condoms, there's still a risk of inpigness.

4)The only options after the fact was to sluice it or get an abortion.

5)We are told our uterus/cervix isn't compatible with an IUD or similar barrier device insertion and is likely to cause a perforation

6)Even though menopause sucks, we are delighted when it starts because it means our quest to NOT get knocked up is almost over

I'd encourage all young childfree women who are able to find a provider willing to do it to get sterilized NOW before ALL preventative birth control options are removed and Roe V Wade gets overturned. I honestly believe that's where we are heading.angrily flogging with a whip

If YOU are the "exception" to what I am saying, then why does my commentary bother you so much?
I don't hate your kids, I HATE YOU!
Do you still get a period if you get Essure? I've been on Depo for a long time and I haven't had a period in YEARS!!!! This is the best thing EVER!!! I do want to get sterilized but I'm afraid to go back to having periods again.....

Yes, you do. Your hormonal signals still work as normal, even if the ova never reaches your uterus, so you would still get a period.

If you want to not have periods, you could always stay on Depo. Or, alternatively, you could look into getting a uterine ablation. An ablation will reduce or stop your period.
I asked for ablation along with my filshie clips and the doctor looked me square in the eye and said "no".. Good luck!

To be completely fair, ablation does carry heavier risks than a tubal usually does. But still, it's fucking stupid that they feel like they have any right to just give an outright "no" to an adult who should be able to do whatever she wants with her body.

I wouldn't take the risks personally, and I like having a period to assure me that I'm not coming down with a case of sperm poisoning. But that's just me -- I'm lucky in terms of how easy my periods are, and also that my partner doesn't care at all when I'm on the rag. So really, it's not inconvenient to me. But that's only me.

Women should be able to do whatever they want with their own bodies.

Yeah and I'd also be opening and wiring a steady flow of cash into an Abortion Fund. Just in case I needed to fly to Canada or China to get one.
If Romney wins then these fuckers will have a president who will sign whatever they want to slip across his desk.

Maybe I should get a vascectomy. Just in case they pass a law requiring fertile people to divorce their sterilized spouses (spice?) and marry fertile things and make babies. I wouldn't put it passed them to try.

The reasons for this are obvious: 1) they hate sex for pleasure out of some Puritanical, Victorian mindset and 2) they want to increase the white birth rate at any cost.

I'd consider it. Even if my partner was sterilized, I still would have gotten fixed anyway just for my own peace of mind. Vasectomies aren't too expensive, either, and from what I hear, a bit easier to get than a tubal.

3. they resent/fear that only women have magic baby-making juju, and look down on those women who choose not to use their "gift".

Allright...this may not be the most popular opinion ever, but I just have to say this doesn't amount to jack sh!t unless the protest included an upcoming Supreme Court case to overturn Roe.

Seriously, it's been how many decades that the anti-abortion crowd has been banging their head against the wall? Besides a tiny few piddly laws that haven't even BEGUN to affect reproductive choice, what the heck is there? Waving gory signs and banners, ooh, so scary...

IMHO you could just yawn and go back to laughing at breeders.

I'm sorry but you can't possibly be serious. Wrongney is a definite liberal who's only being run becaue Palin ran away, Sanitorum turned into a fundie fanatic and Ron Paul is too old and can't overcome the Islamophobiac element of Rightwingistan.

I lurk and comment on rightie sites, folks, people are specifically telling the Socons in general and the ant-abortion crowd in particular to STFU because everything is about the economy this time around.

There are numerous state laws on the books that are sitting there, biding their time. All you need is for Romney to appoint one or two new judges. When an anti-choice law goes up against the Court, for it WILL, (if Romney gets to appoint judges,) and Romney's toadies, along with Scalia and Co. will vote to OVERTURN abortion in the USA.

I don't want to live in Romania. My body is MINE, you hear that?!? Nobody owns my body but ME.

If you don't want an abortion, don't get one!
If you don't lik cigarettes, then don't smoke!
If you don't like alcohol, then don't drink!
If you don't like porn, then stay away from Playboy!

You see the picture here? It is a CHOICE. Anti-choice fucktards would try to force their choice upon me and mine, beause they do NOT believe in choice for women. They are the antithesis of freedom in the USA. angry flipping off

You smell like some pro-life troll who is trying to play nice with the Bratfree crowd here. I suggest you take it somewhere else, because we have a nasty little habit of roasting trolls, and I guarantee you won't like it.
Peace- I was wondering what that familiar smell was. I thought the same as you about our new little friend here. Pretty soon we will smell BBQ troll, and that's a smell I enjoydevil with smile

I miss my little feather baby.
Yeah. For people who say these 'womens issues' are bullshit and it's just a distraction -

Uh - it IS the Right Wingers saying and doing these crazy things. Again, it is not only what they spew - it is laws and restrictions they *have* already successfully passed and all the ones they keep proposing - they are doing these things.

How is this a 'distraction'? Is it an attempt to distract sane people AWAY from them? Because that is what's happening.

If they wanted to attract people TO them - they would at least shut up.

And if it's some distraction by the Left - uh - again - the Republicans are saying and doing these things, it's not some stuff that appeared to Libs in cloud of bong smoke. Actual facts. Recorded for posterity and everything.

So.

Yes, it is of concern to me. It is of concern to THE ECONOMY also because taking female rights away would cause some really bad stinky things to happen to the economy. This also appeared to me in a cloud of bong smoke while I was hugging some trees and whales at Burning Man.

Did somebody say BBQ troll?

Just because Romney doesn't talk about it in debates, doesn't mean he's not going to get some nasty anti-freedom laws to pass once he (he hopes so, anyway) gets into office. He knows how to dupe the American people into thinking this is all about the economy... people need to wake the hell up and look at what's going on. It's right there in the damn platform... Romney is against freedom for women. His religion dictates that women are nothing but broodmares, that their place is in the home, that they need to be kept barefoot and inpig, yada yada yada.

I will be embarrassed for my countrymen if they are this easily fooled.
