“The pandemic is driving families deeper and deeper into poverty, and it’s devastating,” said Representative Richard E. Neal of Massachusetts, the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee and one of the champions of the provision. “This money is going to be the difference in a roof over someone’s head or food on their table. This is how the tax code is supposed to work for those who need it most.”

And the phaseouts are HUGE--75k for singles, 150k for married. I'm married and 75k is more than our combined income.

Romney's anti-poverty program would completely eliminate the SALT deductions to pay for things. Because heaven forbid we tax large corporations to pay their fair share. No, they would make us in blue states shoulder the costs of all this crap. As it is we pay an extra $12k/YEAR because of Trump's fucking up the SALT deductions. We have to budget out one year in advance for this. And this is on top of what we already pay, which is huge. That $12k/year means no Christmas and no birthdays. It means no extra money to shop at local businesses.
Here's an idea: Don't breed what you don't feed. Don't expect the rest of society to pay for your kids. All this extra money will do is encourage breeding willy-nilly by people who can ill afford the ones they already brought into the world.

$12k is a lot of money Peace. Lots of money for an individual, not for a corporation. The corporations that have workers on welfare yet have CEOs on the Forbes list can be first in line to pay this.

I wouldn't have such a problem with food stamps if it was restricted to nutritious food only. I'll never understand why you can buy soda with food stamps, but not a rotisserie chicken. If I ran the program, you wouldn't be able to buy candy, soda, chips or baked goods with the money, just fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, eggs, cheap cuts of meat (no steak and lobster!) and frozen or canned goods.

They're already expanding other forms of welfare as well. I don't recall the exact mechanism, but food stamps has already been extended, or is part of the latest stimulus package.

Well this is surprising. Repugnicans want to pay breeders even more than the democrats' plan:
https://www.deseret.com/indepth/2021/2/9/22274710/the-case-for-and-against-mitt-romney-utah-child-allowance-plan-draws-anti-poverty-measure
Romney wants to pay them monthly while Rubio and Lee want an even bigger tax credit. Romney's plan has no work requirement.

Why are we giving money to people who are breeding and creating additional users of public services? It's economically unsound. Fucking Congress critters.

They get cash. They use it to buy beer, cigarettes and lottery tickets.
I might not have a problem with it either if everyone received help equally.

I read a document recently written by a financial analyst pointing out the obvious evidence that the mother of all recessions is coming within a few years. Our crippling national debt is going to be a major factor yet the party in charge wants to spend us into oblivion.

I found it here:

The page is spammy, but the actual document is very scientific. I don't know why they had to distribute it in this less-than-credible format.

I used a fake email to get it. It talks about how corporate and government debt is reaching a level that is past recoverable. It was long and had lots of evidence to support his claims. I don't remember the specifics right now, but the problem is especially bad in the EU. It has to do with the finance laws that enabled the Game Stop rebellion allowing mega corporations to over-borrow by issuing corporate bonds and governments carrying crippling debt.

Robinhood doesn't actually execute any trades. They sell user's trade orders to Citadel, a trade executor. Citadel then buys the shares on the market, and sells them to Robinhood for a slight markup. It's how Robinhood offers trades for $0 fees. You pay pennies more per share, but don't have to spend $5 per trade.Citadel, and other trade executors, are refusing to buy shares for retail traders. Coincidentally, Citadel also bailed out Melvin fund for their short position in GME. So, Citadel has an interest in not letting the price go up any further. And citadel controls trade execution for dozens of firms. This is definitely illegal. But Citadel is betting that the resulting SEC fines from this illegal manipulation will be less than the loss they would get if they didn't suppress the price.
