because Pertussis is now an epidemic here. http://www.thenewstribune.com/2012/05/10/2138903/whooping-cough-epidemic-declared.html?storylink=fb SEATTLE — Washington state's worst outbreak of whooping cough in decades has prompted health officials to declare an epidemic, seek help from federal experts and urge residents to get vaccinated amid worry that cases of the highly contagious disease could spike much higher.
It's the first state to declare a whooping cough, or pertussis, epidemic since 2010, when California had more than 9,000 cases, including 10 deaths. Washington has had 10 times the cases reported in 2011, and so has Wisconsin with nearly 2,000 cases this year, though that state has not declared an epidemic.

I think we already had this scare in Chi Town. For some reason I thought though - doesn't the weather go from W to E? Not entirely sure or why I thought of that - maybe germs blowing around? At this rate all this shit probably just revolves all around continuously now anyway. People go back and forth on planes. Including Anti Vaxers, lots of people are straight up filthy dirty, - Here's a horrifying mental picture - I was reading about this cloud of pollen that was floating around Moscow - so green and thick it colored the sky. Imagine if that were germs...... Ooooog I try not to complain about my health too much, why be whiny and it's not like I have a chronic thing, things could be worse, I am reasonably healthy - But - I have recently just been picking up every goddamned bug that comes along! It's like once a month I have some 'issue'. Cold, stomach thing, sometimes a bit worse / flu like thing. In the past - I'd get sick maybe once or twice a year, if that. Now - it's like getting another damned period! I always wash my hands, do not touch face, eat reasonably healthy, etc - this is getting extremely OLD. And, I know I must be fairly healthy because alot of times it's not like I get 'fully sick'. It's like this low grade thing that hangs with you. So I must be fairly healthy to ward it partially off, or it could be what some of this weird shit has morphed into. This is getting ridiculous! I don't know what else I can possibly do. My Mom told me that I need to be exposed to "more germs". HEAD EXPLOSION! I can't afford to get sick, either. Healthy Vibes to you all ~

Heh, this goes with the little fact that I read that actor Jared Padalecki who just became a breeder with a woman he's been married to for only two years (and have only know only months prior) and he says he's *very* anti-vaccination and that he wants to do more "research." Well, hopefully the dumbass sees that Washington state and California have both declared pertussis epidemics - Seattle being where his loaf was sluiced, which is only a small distance away from Vancouver where he films Supernatural, and California is where the family spends the rest of the time. I bet there will be enough "research" when his newborn son is turning blue and gasping because it can't get enough air in between coughing fits. He has proven every bit as retarded as I automatically assume somebody raised in Texas is.

i keep hearing about this- and there were 3 cases in a school in oregon, along witht he flu going around there. they're going to disinfect the entire school before ro-opening it.

Yep. Already went and got a booster shot. I'm not taking any chances. I really don't see how crunchy parents can watch this outbreak and NOT worry that their kid will catch it. I think part of the anti-vax problem is that NO ONE who's raising a kid now is old enough to remember polio, smallpox, and other diseases that wiped out kids or left them disfigured and scarred. We've been fortunate to live in a time with vaccines and antibiotics that have made life pretty easy, and a lot of people seem to feel that those illnesses are part of the past and no longer a threat. They don't get how herd immunity works, or how pathogens can mutate. Scary level of ignorance.

i was having dinner with a small group of women last night - some of who are PNBs- and we were talking about this. one of my friends works for the king county health deptartment and she was saying how this anti-vax situation is going to boil over soon. we were also making fun of vashon island specifically, laughing about how people there don't get vaccinated, use diapers, or allow plastic bags in their homes, and all have compost heaps, raise chickens and wear birkenstocks.

Yep, enough resurgence of nasty infectious diseases will force the issue. I predict that doctors and school districts will come down on non-vaxxers eventually. Too bad we have to pay the price in the meantime.

Hubby and I are getting booster shots next week. So is my Granny. We don't see as much of the anti vax crap in Texas but we still see enough of it to be concerned. That is NOT something I would want to deal with.

I must come to defend my birkenstocks. I found a pair in an antique shop for $8 and have been wearing them nonstop because they relieve my plantar fasciitis pain. I live in the Austin area and there are billboards everywhere saying to get vaccinated. I read on the CDC site that the vaccine for pertussis protects against tetanus and diphtheria. The adult booster is known as Tdap. Is this the same booster they're telling everyone to get for pertussis? I ask because I stepped on a rusty nail at work back in 2007 and had a booster for tetanus the day after. Any of our medical professionals wish to weigh in? Anti-vaxers are stupid for thinking that these diseases can't make a comeback and wipe out a bunch of people.

I live in WA, and this is all over the news. My hubby went to the doctor a couple weeks ago for back pain and ended up getting a pertussis booster, which is good because he works in a Petri dish environment...a university. The selfish, lazy, and/or awwtizm-paranoid anti-vax breeders are squarely responsible for this situation. And a special FUCK YOU to that doctor who was called out not that long ago for falsely starting all the vaccines-cause-awwtizm hysteria. Hm, I had a tetanus booster last year, I wonder if it was the Tdap (been seeing signs outside all the pharmacies around here for it). Guess I need to call my doctor's nurse and ask. That would make my day if I had already had my booster! Of course I wouldn't be surprised either because my GP is fucking awesome and CF.

Very informative link, thanks Thom! I'll have to call the clinic where I was vaccinated and ask if I got just the Td booster or the Tdap. I have a feeling it might have just been Td, and if that's the case I'll have to wait 5 more years before getting Tdap. I guess if I hear hacking brats I'll just run away.

I'm on week 7 of my pertussis ordeal. I work in a hospital and some granolamoo brought her kid in with whooping cough. Half the hospital staff had it within a month. I'm 99% back to full health now, but the first month was NOT fun. Get your booster shots!!
