Auschwitz Selfie
July 22, 2014
I saw this yesterday on one of my bs internet sites that I like to look at and then noticed that it made it to CNN this morning. This 15 year old girl took a smiling selfie at Auschwitz and posted it to her Twitter. This particular article is defending her for a litany of vague reasons from 'well she's just 15' to 'let people have their own reactions'.

I want to be that person with a generous spirit who gives her the benefit of the doubt, I really do, but I can't because I find myself incensed by this. Her stupid, smiling face with the borderline-special needs expression, her pink hoodie, her Twitter handle 'Princess Brianna', and the fact that she has her fucking earbuds in all make me extremely stabby.

I guess the back story is that her and her dad were studying Auschwitz together. Now he's passed away and she goes there and takes a selfie for her dad. I'm not buying it. I think she's an asshole and this stunt proves that on a fundamental level, she doesn't understand the gravity of what happened there.

And this ties in to another thread about why I disklike kids or young people in general. They lack empathy and reason. Kids turn into adults, sometimes awesome adults that I want to know, but until they reach a certain age, I don't want them near me or on my fucking interwebs.

Am I way off base for hating on this chick?

No, you aren't off base at all. If she had studied Auschwitz with her dad, then she is aware of the carnage that took place there. She is an asshole for doing this. It just shows that she lacks respect for the amount of human suffering that the place represents. Auschwitz is a place to pay respects and honor those who died there. It is not a place to do a stupid-ass smiling selfie.
Re: Auschwitz Selfie

Agreed, dorisan. The whole point of a selfie is to focus on oneself. The goofy-ass expression in that photo says it all. Auschwitz is probably the last place I'd crack a smile, but then a lot of teens aren't too aware of how they come across. Maybe she will learn something from the experience, we can only hope.

It takes a child to raze a village.

I don't think you're really off-base...I wanted to fucking punch my computer when I saw that. I take selfies every so often, but I would never take them at Auschwitz. That's just blatant disrespect. Would I take pictures of the place itself? Definitely...I'm all about history.

Speaking of history...there was a guest lecturer in one of my German classes. We were studying WW2, the Holocaust, and everything related. The speaker was a retired professor who grew up in Germany around that time, and he was Jewish. He carried around his yellow star that they had to wear, and he brought it to our class. I took a pic of it...because honestly, when would I get another chance to meet someone and touch something from that era?

Re: Auschwitz Selfie

The reason it's SO offensive is because she studied about the atrocities that went on there and is aware, which removes any, "She was just a kid and didn't know any better!" arguments. God, could she have chosen a worse place to snap a giddy selfie and been any more foolish than to post it online? It brings a new definition to the word inappropriate. I am also wondering what adult she was with that failed to call it to her attention how inappropriate and offensive posting that selfie would be?the world 'fail' on flames

If YOU are the "exception" to what I am saying, then why does my commentary bother you so much?

Re: Auschwitz Selfie

What la crazy set of logical leaps !!!

That young woman takes a selfie in an incredibly disrespectful way in a place with a history of horror.
It is supposed to honour a dead dad who supposedly taught her the true history of that place.
And he will never see that self-satisfied inappropriate picture, because he is dead.

In my opinion, she learned nothing.

I am quite sure that there are far far more appropriate ways to honour both the history of the place and her fatherès teachings.
First, she should research what the survivors of that horror would like for memorial acts.
Re: Auschwitz Selfie

Selfies ARE narcissistic; I take them from time to time to send a hot one to the bf, or maybe something new for Facefart, and they are ALL ABOUT ME. I'm not against selfies in general, but to take one at Auschwitz would be the pinnacle of offensiveness! I do want to punch this girl in the face.

It doesn't say so in this link, but when she found out her pic was being retweeted in a negative way, her reply was, "I'm famous y'all!!"

Seriously, who IS supervising this twit?
Re: Auschwitz Selfie
July 22, 2014
What part of her knowledge of Auschwitz was causing this smile of hers? The families that got ripped apart at the trains? The thousands of starving prisoners who were so desperate they would sell out their own families for a scrap of food? The piles of naked, gassed bodies waiting for the fires? Maybe she was thinking about all the people who were tortured in the name of disgusting "medical" experiments.

FUCK. The things that happened to people in these concentration camps were pure hell on Earth. If any place on this planet could be designated as "sacred", it's Auschwitz. Not as in sacred because it's so beautiful, but sacred because of the horrors and suffering that happened there demand respect and reverence. NOBODY should be smiling at Auschwitz, least of all this little IDIOT. If you don't "get it", then do everyone who cares a favor and stay the hell home.
Re: Auschwitz Selfie

I decided not to visit Auschwitz when I had the opportunity, I knew it would stay with me for days and make me extremely sad. Many years ago I listened to a lecture given by a holocaust survivor and that was extremely intense.

I find her complete lack of empathy chilling; if there is anything that will lead to another Auschwitz it is people like this.

Jesus Kee-rist on a cracker! What a self-absorbed little twit! What a narcissistic little sociopath! She and Duh were studying the Holocaust, so she had to take some idiotic selfie for Duh?! No, you weren't wrong to be pissed off, Starbelly. It's shit like this that really makes me despair that humans ever learn from history and so the same toxic shit keeps happening over and over and over. Given the history of Auschwitz, it is beyond....hell, I don't even have a word for it...to do something like get her stupid face on her cellie. No respect for what happened there, which makes me wonder how much studying about the Holocaust she actually did. :flamingspanking with a whip on the ass

I agree. It's all about them, them, them. Teenagers are much like infants in this way--the world exists to serve THEIR needs and everyone else be damned.

The small percentage of young people who are caring and compassionate usually get bullied into submission by their peers.

I agree with this as well. Hell, I cared a lot about people and when the topic of auschwitz came up in school I would at the very least approach it with solemnity. I wouldn't dare act as if I wasn't interested because I was. It made me learn. This pathetic fuck should burn.

This describes most of the teens I went to school with 30 years ago so it appears nothing has changed, they just have more ways to feed their narcissism.

Fuck this bitch. If she doesn't realize how obscenely inappropriate it is to take a "selfie" at a concentration camp she sure as fuck isn't mature enough to visit one.

This little head up her ass bitch also likes to tweet death threats to people who call her out on her shitty behavior. Looks like a stellar girl. :hardcore

If she really studied the Holocaust, she would not have done this shit. I wonder if she knows the really ugly side of what happened at Auschwitz, has seen the photos of emaciated people and piles of naked shaved bodies rotting out in the open? The shrunken heads posted here and there to inflict fear into the surviving prisoners? The Mengele experiments? I think not. Stupid little cunt deserves every message of hate she gets, and all the coddlers can go sit on a cactus and spin.

The Auschwitz museum website lists all of the requirements for being at the center (ie, no photos of victims' hair, and I believe no photos in Block 11, no flash photography, NO STROLLERS, etc). I just can't get my head wrapped around how incredibly fucking stupid, disrespectful, and self absorbed one has to be to display behavior like this. It'd be like taking a ground zero selfies.

This is what got me.
Kids are narcissistic by default, not to mention stupid. She's not the first OR the last dumbass sprog to post a selfie from a completely inappropriate place. I'm not defending her, don't get me wrong, what I'm saying is that the selfie itself didn't surprise me. But her reaction... Holy shit. She deserves every bit of negative publicity she gets, and then some.

I don't have low self-esteem. That's a mistake. I have low esteem for everyone else.

I can't believe this nasty, disrespectful whore. I've been to Auschwitz. I was 14 years old, and the last fucking thing on my mind while I was there was taking pictures, let alone fucking smiling. Still, at 32 years old, I can remember the smell of burning human flesh around the crematorium. Yes, the smell has lingered for decades. I remember the fucking piles upon piles of human hair, eyeglasses, shoes, etc. I remember hundreds of gouges in the gas chamber walls, made by human fingernails as people were dying from Zyklon B.

Disrespectful. Disgusting. Keep doing your dead father proud, you insensitive little cunt.
Re: Auschwitz Selfie
July 24, 2014
I could almost forgive the selfie....still inappropriate but I could see one taking a selfie to honor their parent ("look dad, I made it here to see what we studied for so long" type of thing). Retarded I know but people do weird things to honor a loved one.

This however was not honoring a loved one. This is just pure arrogance, empty-headed, childish and brazenly narcissistic.

May she die in a fire. :flaming

As a Jewish Person -

Oddly, I have no opinion on this.

Well I do in that the kid seems to be kind of making an ass of herself.

But, if it were - which I thought at first glance - just some person taking a pic there - eh, I don't know if it's that big of a deal.

She does seem to be kind of clueless here, at the least.

None of these WWII horrors affected any of my relatives. My idea on things like these is - I will leave it to others who know more, and were affected, to speak. They know better, it's not for me to say, something like that.

I feel the same way about the latest Israel / Palestine war. And their various issues. It's not for me to say. I don't live there.

Well, either I am going with my usual ideology of staying neutral (or at least not getting hot tempered) on things that not only don't affect me, I have no business saying ~

Or ~

All faith in humanity has finally been ground out of me.

It's probably a combo of both.

Fucking cunt. No thanks to this I spent the last hour watching medical fetish porn. Yes I have a sick twisted mind and I am sure that someone will take offense to it.

I really hate myself sometimes... This is one of those times.
