Why This Video Of A Beluga Whale 'Playing' With Children Is Actually Very Sad

Quote

While on a recent trip to the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut, two small children had an an encounter with a beluga whale that’s now going viral. For several moments, the captive animal interacts with the astonished youngsters, much to their delight.

But while the experience is clearly a whimsical one for the children and adults on hand, to say the beluga is being "playful” (as many outlets have reported) is a grave misinterpretation.

According to Dr. Lori Marino, a beluga behavior specialist with The Kimmela Center, the animal’s behavior is “absolutely definitively aggression.”

“The open mouth and posturing are typical of the way cetaceans express aggression and I’ve seen a lot in captivity in the very same circumstances. This poor animal is telling the kids: ‘Get away’. It’s a threat,” Dr. Marino told The Dodo.

“While belugas and other cetaceans in the wild make the same aggressive motions (open mouth, etc.) in this case, in my opinion, it is clearly due to the fact that these whales are crammed into this tank and have nowhere to go to escape the screaming kids poking at the glass.”

I'm no expert on cetacean behaviour but seeing it charging at the glass and baring its teeth I can believe that whale is not happy. I hope someone has now educated the little shits about this- or even better, decided not to take them to any zoo ever again.

Breeders believe everything exists in order to entertain or amuse their brats. This is why zoos, despite their conservation efforts, are sad places. This makes me feel like I felt the day I saw kids screaming and laughing at the big cats endlessly pacing their enclosures with 'cage madness'.

Humans really aren't the smartest monkeys, and many of them live on the wrong side of the enclosure.

Thank you for the education. I did not know this. I know banging on glass upset fish, but I didn't think about sea mammals being upset too... as they were different from fish.

The last time I went to the aquarium was really the LAST time. I wanted to see the fish displays, and of course, part of that was seeing the whales too. What I saw was despicable. The whales were 'pacing' in their tank, as if they were depressed or something.

Kyds were banging their hands against the glass of all the tanks which infuriated me! angry smiley NO parunts ever stopped them from doing this, either.

If I want to see fish, I have an aquarium and I am happy with that. I think they should abolish keeping whales in captivity unless it's a rescue effort. Once the whale is rehabilitated, it should be released back into the wild.

Seeing that video, you don't have to be a Marine Biologist or have letters after your name to realise that the whale is treating the brats as lunch than as a potential plaything (other than any animal 'playing' with its food).

Zoos and aquariums are not the best places for children to be.

Ugh, that poor animal.

I hope the pahrunts of those brats see this and educate the kyds how to be respectful of animals. Although, I realize this is far too optimistic. sad smiley

To be fair to the sprogs some adults are even worse- TRIGGER WARNING for animal cruelty:

Man pours beer over tiger as London zoo Lates parties get out of hand

It's sad that they have to fund research and conservation work with events like this, but even more sad that they attract people who don't appreciate the wildlife.

I'm surprised that zoos and especially aquariums are still profitable given the frequent outcries against them. Don't more people just find them cruel and depressing these days? I got taken to an aquarium when I was 12 and just remember being really upset at seeing a massive Orca in a pool which wasn't really big enough for a few humans to do lane swimming in. More recently I got taken to one on a work trip overseas and while the tanks were enormous I still felt sad seeing the whale shark swimming round in big circles, looking bored as the only one of its species in there. I know some of these places do important work- education, conservation etc- but too often a line is crossed.

But what a new PNA opportunity: That whale ate my toddler for lunch at the PPG aquarium!

Since we don't have African Painted Dogs anymore and Pittsburgh breeders are too cheap to go to Florida to drop them off of Kilamanjaro Safaris...

Some people wonder why Disney keeps The Living Seas at Epcot because the 2nd largest aquarium in the world must be expensive to operate (All those pumps don't run on free Disney magic). The reason is where would all the aquatic animals they have now go? Other aquariums are mostly full and they can't be released into the wild and other facilities probably have the same problem. Come to think of it though, the Living Seas was pretty empty - except for that annoying Nemo ride.
I don't know about Disney's Epcot aquarium but I'm guessing it's quite old, so while that makes sense for them, why are other countries still building new ones? A lot of the ones mentioned here are pretty new, such as the massive one in Dubai.

It's like we have a scandal every few years, like this one and of course the current Blackfish/ San Diego SeaWorld scandal with their orca who has already killed three people, and for a while people give a shit and share the stories on Facebook and Twitter, and then everyone forgets and these places just go on as before. I guess enough people just don't give a shit and they make it worth building new places where breeders and their horrible children can torment animals and bang on the glass.
