China to lift family size restrictions

China to lift family size restrictions

Having scrapped its 1-child policy for a 2-child policy a couple of years ago, China is now set to remove that restriction as well. Because of course the world doesn't have enough people eye rolling smiley. Naturally the move is being cheered by companies that make baby products, which have seen their shares rise.

People: placing profit over the quality of life for their offspring since forever.

China has a severe aging problem in its society, there are too many elderly and not enough workers to take care of them. Your average Chinese worker has two parents, four grandparents to take care of and there is no safety net for those elderly when their worker support crashes.

Companies in China are adding robots to their workforce to supplement the lack of workers, or moving to cheaper locations like Vietnam. The worker pool that exists in China is demanding higher salaries because they now can.

The hell with the environment, business must have cheap labor!

I wonder how many of these only children are going for multiple offspring? It would be funny if they didn't have 3-5 kids.

Answer: not many. China's fertility rate is below 2. Turns out once you show people an alternative to having kids, they aren't so keen to have that many.

And like the rest of the world, China is urbanizing. They don't need a lot of kids to work the fields, the child mortality rate dropped, and people living in a small city apartment simply don't have room for kids.

Interesting but a sort of OT:

China is also introducing the Social Credit System.
"The program is due to be fully operational by 2020, but is being piloted for millions of people already. The scheme is mandatory."

One of the consequences of a bad score is "Banning you or your kids from the best schools".
17 people who refused to carry out military service last year were barred from enrolling in higher education, applying for high school, or continuing their studies, Beijing News reported.

Citizens with low social credit would also be prohibited from enrolling their children at high-paying private schools, Botsman said. It's not clear whether this particular policy has been put into action yet.

Wasn’t there an episode of Black Mirror like this? Why does it seem like a lot of science fiction turns out right in the end.

I think it's less to do with science fiction being predictive and more to do with people taking inspiration from science fiction; give it 50-100 years and Soylent Green may become the norm...

That said, a lot of creativity goes into science fiction - post-apocalyptic or otherwise - and with so many different authors producing different fantastical ideas, a handful of them are bound to come true one way or another.

China's Social Credit System will work for five to ten years before China's citizens will start out foxing it.
