Public emergency declared in Washington as measles spreads through anti-vax community

It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of these viruses come back, but mutated and impossible to cure. The ones who are smart enough to have their vaccinations will still suffer and die as new mutations come out of the old, stronger viruses. That's what really freaks me out about this whole thing.

You read my mind, mum. I see a whole Stephen King novel coming out of the anti-vax silliness.
I'm actually re-reading The Stand right now. I read it about twenty-odd years ago, and it scared the living daylights out of me. ITA that it totally reminds me of what can happen if a massive epidemic or pandemic breaks out. The fact that these diseases are totally preventable and vaccinations are largely safe, just makes me even angrier, and the book's plot even more realistic.

My favorite wrap-up comment there is "Unvaccinated children are like dark humor...they never get old."

The FB comments are too good. The group is closed, so we can't see what other stupidities are posted. Sage and myrtle to treat AIDS, perhaps?

Look on the bright side: many anti-vaxxers tend to be conservative Republican, homeschooling, fundy Christian. If they die off, it's a win win for the rest of us.

^^ ....except for the ones that are crunchy hippies. Lots of people who like things "natural" and object to the chemicals in vaccines refuse to immunize their kids. Sure, hippies. Death is as natural as you can get.

Funny how both ends of the political horseshoe go for the same wackadoo shit.
More goodness from the anti-vaxers' bounty!

Child in Washington that got the MMR vaccine (one of them) contracts measles anyway. Like the anti-vax flame needs more fanning. "Duhhhhhh, vackzeens dun wurrrrk! SEEEEE?! Dey gets da sick anywayz!!1" Could be they didn't get enough vaccinations or for all we know, it could be the beginning of a mutation that is immune to the vaccines.

That's just a small handful of illness-related headlines too. People are getting sick everywhere. Don't want to give away my own location, but cases of whooping cough have been identified in the county right beside mine too. Good times.

both ends meet in the middle??

CERTIFIED HOSEHEAD!!!

people (especially women) do not give ONE DAMN about what they inflict on children and I defy anyone to prove me wrong

Dysfunctional relationships almost always have a child. The more dysfunctional, the more children.

The selfish wants of adults outweigh the needs of the child.

Some mistakes cannot be fixed, but some mistakes can be 'fixed'.

People who say they sleep like a baby usually don't have one. Leo J. Burke

Adoption agencies have strict criteria (usually). Breeders, whose combined IQ's would barely hit triple digits, have none.

But at least they won't get autism, right?

Yep. Better dead than "special."

I know I'm not alone here, but that reasoning has always baffled me..."I'd rather risk my child being blind/disfigured/brain damaged/corpsified than autistic."

Hasn't anyone done a study showing that the percentage of autistic kids is the same in anti-vax communities as it is among sane people? Of course, these nutjobs are experts at picking and choosing which studies they believe, so I suppose more actual facts would do no good....

Someone tell me again why this isn't considered neglect or endangerment?

It should be. Every parent who has access to vaccinations for their kids and doesn't have it done should be jailed. Their kids should be vaxxed and put in foster care. Having kids and then deliberately risking their lives (and everyone's around them) should be treated as a crime.

The raging irony is that I wasn't vaccinated (bullshit involving my adoption, had a PNB ) and I turned up autistic!

I like this response in the comments:

If you refuse to vaccinate your child and they get sick you should be denied medical help. If you don't trust medical science enough to vaccinate then you shouldn't trust medical science for treatment.

And the nutjob saying nothing would change her mind-- if her kid winds up blind (or dead) from measles, I wonder what she'd say?

(That "nothing will change my mind!" stance always makes me think of Bill Nye dicing up the creationist...when the creationist was asked if anything would make him change his mind, he said what he believed was based on the word of god, so no. They asked Bill Nye what it would take to change his mind, and he said, "Evidence!")
There should be no exemptions for vaccinations, period, with the exception of a legitimate life-threatening reaction to vaccines, like an allergy. I don't give a fuck about personal, philosophical, or religious beliefs - your kids get their shots, period. No arguments, no negotiations, no exemptions - you do it, end of story. If you don't do it, you get your kids taken away for good and the state gives them their shots. That, or the family lives under house arrest/quarantine until such a time that the breeders agree to get everyone their shots.

I did see something recently about schools refusing to let kids enroll if they aren't up to date on their vaccinations, which is a good start, but breeders will just not send their kids to school to get around that pesky little rule. Unschooling is, sadly, a thing, and it's somehow perfectly legal for parents to keep their kids home from school and proceed to teach them absolutely nothing. Didn't we used to call that "truancy?"

Breeders protesting their "right" to not vaccinate their kids is a laugh. How about everyone else's right to not get sick, including their own children? If these people want their kids to die, just throw them into traffic and get it over with instead of forcing them to endure horrible sicknesses for weeks or months before succumbing to them. I just don't get what the hell kind of a parent would choose to put their kids through a disease instead of taking simple measures to prevent it.
There are now two confirmed cases of the measles in Vancouver. One was somebody from the airport, and the other wasn't.

I think that there should be stiff penalties for not having your kid vaxxed. Take the kids away, severe financial penalties, maybe even jail time. I've been speaking to my husband about the two of us getting booster shots. Most of my vaccinations are very old, and probably not that effective anymore. Next time I see my doc, I'm going to ask him about it.

As for anti-vax breeders protesting? I guess they have a right to protest against whatever they want, but when their ignorance and stupidity puts other people in serious danger, then I'm not so sure...
