The school's actions seem pretty hypocritical to me when USC was complicit in the scheme. According to the article Olivia Jade was in the Bahamas on a yacht that belongs to a "top USC official" when she found out.


More people will be bleating "but it's not faiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiir to punish the kids when they didn't know," but seriously if you are being asked to pose for pictures like you are on the crew team, someone with a room temperature IQ could figure that one out. Of course they knew.

And her father is one of those bootstrap assholes who likes to pretend he made his fortune from the bottom up and conveniently ignore the part where he received a load of money from his father to start it. Meanwhile, he actively engages in a system that prevents somebody from bootstrapping because he bought his feeble-brained daughter a spot in college that could have gone to a kid who actually valued education.

I also found a new term I like....Lawnmower Parent: Mommies and Daddies who plow everything out of a kids' way, as opposed to making the kid address his/her own obstacles in life.

John Oliver did a piece on this and called it Snowplow Parenting. One of the "children" they talked about was a girl who didn't like any kind of sauce on her food, so her parents went to extreme measures to ensure she never had to deal with sauce or condiments (you can't make this shit up, I swear). They would call friends before meals together to remind them to make sure there were no sauce-like foods on the table-- apparently it wasn't enough for her not to have it, no one else could, either. She wound up dropping out of college because she "couldn't deal" with condiments in the cafeteria.

Why don't we ban people like that from the country?

This seems to be a typical update on this story regarding Loughlin, that she didn't plea guilty because she doesn't think she did anything wrong and thought she could beat it and now she's being hit with bigger charges.

Huffman gave a $15,000 bribe, but Loughlin's alleged crimes are a bigger magnitude--she and her dimwit husband paid $500,000. A non celebrity would go to prison for a long time but she likely will not because lawyers. Perhaps there is satisfaction in knowing that she will spend every penny on her legal defense and her daughters will actually have to wear Target clothes and buy their makeup at Target.


One thing is for sure, and it's already started with the statements that are getting leaked to the press. Her defense will consist of "I didn't know what I was doing was wrong!" and "As a parent, I just wanted to do the best for my chyuld. What parunt would not want to do that?" It's nauseating just thinking of it. Let''s hope she doesn't get a Breeder jury but I suppose that's always possible.

There are a bunch of results on a search for snowplow parenting.

I know more than one of these. One brags constantly about it, as if it is a badge of honor that her kids never had to solve their own problems. And brags that one of her kids is now in a very expensive college where the kid can learn critical thinking skills. I'm thinking, bitch.... I learned critical thinking skills as a KID because my parents would tell me to figure it out starting at a very young age. I'm imagining there are a bunch of tards out there who think an overpriced college is where to learn critical thinking skills. And critical thinking skills can be refined/enhanced by reading a number of books that are available at a public library or at an overall cheap cost compared to hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt.

I think the other status symbol is having kids who don't drive. When I was barely 16 I accepted a job not knowing how to drive the extra car (old, stick shift) that my family had sitting in the driveway. (My sisters did not want to learn.) Job = money = gas money = freedom.

Urban kids would be different, but I know a few parents whose kids don't WANT to drive. I guess they don't have to drive because they are chauffeured everywhere. It's probably safer for other drivers on the road, but a lot of kids I see today do not have that used-to-be-normal urge to get away from their parents.

When I was a teen, there was very few jobs in my very small town area.
One day I saw an ad for an "as needed" spring job in which workers would be picking vegetables (peas at first) and would be paid by the bushel.
As each day progressed the owner would winnow down the workers based on work ethic (ie showing up on time, working hard, minimal whining, willing to learn, not damaging plants, etc).
Most people only lasted a few hours due to arduous field picking work. Either the worker would quit or the owner would ask them to leave.
By the end of a couple of weeks, I was one of only a couple of field workers remaining from about 30 who started.

The owner suggesting having me paid by regular hours (instead of by picking volume) because I worked so much that I was constantly outperforming everyone else paid by the bushel.
Soon after that the owner offered me an hourly job for the rest of the summer managing a roadside stand and supervising other students picking vegetables in fields.
He mentioned that I would have to drive a tiny pickup truck in the fields and although I didn't know how, I was absolutely willing to learn.

Initially, pea picking was supposed to be a few hours of pocket money but it turned into much more for me.
That summer work paid my autumn college fees.
I got to be in management for the first time and to a certain degree decide my own hours and work priorities at a young age.
I also got to hire whomever I wanted, so a few of my friends got jobs too.

A phrase that I have used throughout my life developed from that early set of jobs and other work in later life.
"Opportunity often comes disguised as hard work."

That's admirable. Farm work is HARD...people romanticize farm life, but they have no idea what it's really like. (I maintain that anyone who decorates their kitchen with pigs and chickens has never smelled either en masse.) Cheers to you to sticking with it and achieving something!

It's a process to get theserich, mediocre people into the Ivy League schools, then to write their papers to get them through school, to assist them with resumes, and finally, when they are older, to get them hired on for-profit boards, where they show up once every six months and collect hefty fees.

I thought it was pretty interesting and it confirms a lot of what we were talking about.

This makes total sense. If an Ivy League school knows a brat has extremely wealthy parents then the brat would have to work really hard to lose because his parents are going to bail him out at every opportunity. The schools know that if brat will one day be sitting on the board of a for-profit company making decisions that it will become well known that the brat attended a particular Ivy League school. The Ivy Leagues aren't taking the slightest risk by investing in such a guaranteed outcome. And they aren't really investing anything anyway, just giving admission to a student because of their family. And tuition will be paid in full and there may even be a building donated in the process.

I worked with a guy who used his new board position on a non-profit as an excuse for missing work (his real job) and he managed to get away with not doing any work. I ended up redoing his work because despite his claims that he was this amazing attorney he couldn't do the relatively simple tasks he was given. What he gave me when I took over wasn't even coherent. When I asked him questions about the work he'd just foray it into talking about himself and his non-profit work. I gave up and restarted the project over from the beginning.

He somehow schmoozed his way into a much better gig in another part of the company where he was promoted to management at an insanely fast pace and I heard that his co-workers couldn't stand him because he never did any work. Trust me when I say, he knew someone in an important position and I recall him bragging about certain relatives in public offices. His co-workers busted their butts and he did nothing but schmooze. I'd bet someone basically went to law school for the chump. And I work at a company that has solid employees that have been here 20 years and haven't been promoted to management. That should tell you something!
