74-year-old woman gives birth to twins through IVF

A 74-year-old Indian woman has reportedly given birth to a set of twins — becoming the oldest woman in the world to carry an infant to full term.

Doctors in Gunter — located on the Eastern coast of India in the state of Andhra Pradesh — claim that Erramatti Mangayamma and her husband, Yaramati Sitarama Rajarao, 78, have delivered two healthy girls via cesarean section at a private hospital on Sept. 5.

Dr. Sanakkayala Umasankar said the “medical miracle” was made possible by in vitro fertilization and a team of 10 doctors.

However, the Andhra Pradesh Medical Council, a government-authorized agency which regulates the practice of medicine in the region, told the Times of India (TOI) it is investigating the birth.

“It is certainly a debatable issue,” said council chairman Buchipudi Sambasiva Reddy. “We will discuss this at our next governing counsel meeting.”


Umasankar told TOI, “We followed all rules” of standard IVF procedure, adding that a “confidentiality clause” prevented him from elaborating on their treatment.

It reportedly took Mangayamma only one cycle of IVF to get pregnant, which doctors said is owed to her good physical health. She also underwent a psychological examination to be sure she was mentally prepared.

The couple, together 57 years, had tried early in their marriage to conceive, but could not — even after consulting doctors and religious temples.

“People looked at me with accusing eyes, as if I had committed a sin,” Mangayamma told TOI. “Neighbors would call me ‘godralu’ [a curse word for a childless woman]. However, my husband stood by me like a rock.”

Rajarao, a farmer, added, “We are the happiest couple on earth today. We have our own children.”

The couple first consulted last year with IVF expert Umasankar, who then brought the case to a board of cardiologists, gynecologists and pediatricians before taking on Mangayamma and Rajarao as clients.

Women are becoming pregnant at increasingly older ages as more and more research is devoted to pushing the boundaries of IVF — a industry projected to be worth $36.2 billion by 2026.

But some experts say giving birth at Mangayamma’s age through IVF can be risky, experimental and exploitative.

According to a 2015 report by the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART), women 35 and over have an exponentially higher chance miscarriage, and women over 44 using their own eggs (as opposed to a younger donor egg) have on average a 0.6% chance of bringing a healthy baby to full term.

Mangayamma’s doctors did not comment on whether they used eggs from a donor or the patient’s own, which can significantly impact the outcome.

Dr. David Seifer, a fertility specialist at Yale Medicine, told Fast Company in May, “Every woman on the planet has the challenge of the DNA within their eggs degrading over time, a process that accelerates from the time they are in their mid-30s to menopause.”

However, fertility doctors are now developing new, unproven methods of preserving ova of older women and offering them to patients — a practice some experts call unethical.

“For now, these treatments are experimental,” says Seifer. “There’s a fine line between being encouraging and giving false hope.”

Of course they're happy. At that age they'll very likely die before the brats are eighteen and it will become someone else's problem.

My very best friend on the planet is a childfree Indian woman (She's in her mid 40's and has been in this country about 15 years). She was raised very traditionally, and commented when this came out about how childless women are ostracized and can bring shame to their families. Apparently the stigma, no matter what your age, never goes away. She is married and divorced, no kids, has an incredible education and travels the world quite a bit. It took her leaving her country of birth and moving to the other side of the world to achieve all of that.

Not this bullshit again!! I understand that she didn't like to be ostracized--who does?--but at 74, she has no business having babies. Who knows what condition her ova were in--or her husband's sperm for that matter? It is well known that both ova and sperm degenerate with age. And at their ages, the parents may well not be alive when the twins reach the age of 18. A couple of years after my parents adopted me, they applied to adopt a second child, but they got turned down because it was thought that at 58, he might not live until that child was 18. In my case, , he lived until I was18, but died a few months later.

IMO, the woman and her husband were being selfish to have children at their ages. I don't get this nonsense with wanting a "mini-me". If they wanted children that badly, they should have adopted children. But, then those children wouldn't be their "mini-mes".

India tends to be very backward about some things, especially in how women are treated. Women are treated as chattel. Sexual assault and rape are off the charts.
