At the rate things are going, the only hope schools might have is to hire people like this with not even minimum qualifications because they're desperate for work. Because no other self-respecting person will take any job working with brats even if it paid well. Or hey, just look up all the local pedos and interview them for any school-related jobs - I guarantee you anything they'd all be willing to work for free.

Why a hierarchy with special area teachers at the bottom? It isn't as if they have less education or more time on their hands. Sounds like a big CF designed to turn teachers against each other. Plus the addition of parents who don't parent and flip out when teachers try to have order in their classrooms. Ugh.

In my district, we were just seen as having the “easier” jobs. Specials class was where the kids went so the Important Teachers could have a break, and district office did nothing to combat that attitude. I guess they think that all these concerts and art shows and field days and literary nights just plan themselves.

Oh man. I may be a GenEd teacher, but the way specialists are being crapped on is another reason I'm leaving. Like all teachers, they're getting less and less time to get more and more done, but also a lot of teachers totally de-prioritize what kids learn at art/music/PE/tech! I know a teacher who routinely tries to keep kids from art or PE as either punishment for misbehavior or to re-do substandard work. Ridiculously disrespectful to the specialists. When I was subbing there was one school that was doing a small-group intervention system, and they were actually saddling specialists with reading or math groups a couple times per day. Ugh. Just no.

There's also the fact that the kid may need a change of scenery and a brain break. I've had kids come back from specialist period feeling better and are better able to re-do work or talk about what was bothering them.

This was me. There was a year I had to do small group reading one afternoon a week. I’ll never forget the day the small group reading fell on the same day as two of my concerts. I did a concert in the morning, another in the afternoon, my classroom was in disarray (because my classroom was the stage, which was a whole separate issue) and I was exhausted. I was cleaning up after the second concert and completely forgot about the stupid small group sessions, and the homeroom teacher actually called the office to complain that I didn’t show up. She knew perfectly well where I was, her kids had been in the concerts, and there was absolutely no reason she needed me to pick up this group other than she wanted five less kids in her room.

The office kindly paged me over the loudspeaker to remind me that I had somewhere more important to be.

So instead of getting everything put away I spent a half an hour sitting on the floor in the hallway in my nice dress (because my classroom was still a mess) listening to these kids read through whatever busywork reading assignment they had been given. And I got to stay a half an hour later after work so I could get my set my classroom back up.

I was livid. That year was the beginning of the end for me.
