I know, and I would have hated it too - I didn't take home ec. specifically because I didn't want to deal with the crying baby doll. But if you just said "only the ones who want to have kids need to babysit," everyone would just say they didn't want any to get out of it. Except for maybe one or two doe-eyed teen girls who think a baby will fix all their problems.

Another bad thing about this is that the child required nursing care even though he was not really alive, resources that could have been for a person who was actually living and could recover. Today, with Covid, health care professionals have to make decisions about who gets nursing resources, when those are limited.
