Old Enough to Know Better: Brat Screaming at the Orthodontist
March 23, 2021
I was at the orthodontist today. Two sibling brats who appeared to be about 10 or 11 or were twins proceeded to whine throughout their procedure. The boychild screamed and fake-cried incessantly. Fortunately the adults and the children are in separate rooms but I could hear it from a distance.

Is this anything but a massive parental failure? If you were a parent, wouldn't you raise your kid to do what you say? My parents would have been embarrassed if I had acted that way in a public place and I would have been punished.

Sometimes things in life are not pleasant but you do them anyway. (Medical procedures, etc.) These kids were old enough to know better.

If I had to guess, the whole reason the little shits were there was also due to parental failure along the lines of Mommy and Daddy let the kids suck down soda like water constantly, don't make their kids brush their teeth or floss and the fuckers wind up with cavities in every single tooth. I suppose they might have just needed braces because most kids have horribly fucked up crooked teeth, but it's also definitely not unreasonable to think they were there getting their rotten teeth drilled.

Unless they were retarded, 10-11 is far too old to do that fake crying shit and be allowed to scream during an entire medical procedure. That's toddler behavior. I never did that shit when I was a kid, and I'll be the first to admit I was and still am the biggest fucking baby in the world when it comes to pain and discomfort.

I feel bad for the dentist or hygienist or whomever is working on the kids because you know the kid is screeching and flailing and not being cooperative whatsoever while I'm sure the parents are out in the waiting room, breathing a sigh of relief that someone else is dealing with their brat for 45 minutes. Can't kids be sedated for this kind of thing? Bratty behavior aside, I imagine the chance of the doctor accidentally injuring them because they're acting like assholes is very high. Would it not be in everyone's best interests to give the kid some laughing gas? And what happens when the procedure takes twice as long because the brat won't sit still and shut up? That will mess up everyone else's appointments.

If they were retarded, the crying would be real. Retarded children don’t usually understand the concept of fake crying.
If bell_flower knew that the crying was fake, the kids were most likely not experiencing more than slight discomfort.
I suspect these kids were born healthy but not taught to respect others’ feelings or that their actions have consequences.

Sedation dental requires a specialist and someone to watch that nothing fucked up goes wrong. Even light sedation during office procedures can go wonky in some patients. Even laughing gas is more expensive than just putting up with the squalling. There are dentists out there who won't put up with the squalling.

Good lard n butter. I went through about seven years of extensive orthodontia from about ages 9 to 15 or so, and while it was NOT comfy at times, I didn't pull off that sort of behavior, especially while in the exam room at Dr. L's office!

I probably griped and whined about it to my parents (who, bless them, were pretty understanding because they knew getting arch wires tightened meant it would HURT for several days after), but I was civil and polite to Dr. L and his staff. I sucked it up and subsisted on applesauce, yogurt, and oatmeal as needed when my mouth was sore.

Not knowing the kids involved it's hard to say what exactly was up their butts, but I'd guess that whiny, fake-crying behavior has worked on their parents so they deploy it with other adults at first opportunity...especially if the parents are within earshot because then even if it doesn't work on the other adult, the parents will step in. And if the parent doesn't step in, the kids know the parent heard their "suffering" and the kids can use it as guilt-ammunition later.

I underwent braces for four years, and subsisted on Ibuprofen and Tylenol and when not available I took aspirin.

I almost wrote some additional details in my original post, but I discarded them. They didn't seem relevant, but perhaps they are.

The orthodontist is operating under COVID protocols of course. (It makes me nervous to be in there with my mouth open, lemme tell you.)

You call when you get there; you wait in your car and your person comes to get you, takes your temperature, etc. I got there early and I was people-watching in the parking lot. I noticed these kids in the parking lot because both parunts had really expensive cars...Moo was driving a fancy, new-looking Audi and Dud had a Lexis SUV. I was idly wondering how Breeders afford these vehicles. Then I was wondering, why does it take two parunts to take kids to the orthodontist? Then I noticed Moo and Dud had very little interaction and it seemed deliberate. Moo brought them there, ejected them from the car,(didn't even get out) and Dud took over. Dud wasn't wearing a ring so I figured they were separated or divorced.

So it's possible they are in a divorced situation. If we think regular parunts are bad, divorced parunts can be even worse, particularly if they are at war with each other. They may feel guilty and spoil the brats. Or they may want to be the "fun parunt" because kids can sometimes decide where to live and it's a big FUCK YOU to the non-custodial parent. (And the NCP has to pay.)

At any rate, these kids, particularly the boy child, were behaving like much younger brats.

The first time I went to this new dentist I was probably around 9 or 10 years old. Our previous guy used laughing gas with me, but the new one pulls out this huge needle and I freaked out. I refused to open my mouth and the dentist sent me home.
My mother wasn't there because she was at work and I had to go by myself. His office was on the same block we lived on.
Needless to say, I got shit from her after he called and had to go back the following week...by myself again.
I opened my mouth and yeah, it hurt like hell.
No screaming or fake crying though. I somehow knew better than that.
They sound like a pair of whiny drama queens.
At least their parents have money. I'm sure they got well compensated afterwards.

I've tried to respond twice and the internet keeps eating my posts (probably my fault really).

Yeah, the chilly divorce atmosphere likely doesn't help any issues those kids have. Ugh.

And the kids will wind up paying the price for their parents' assholery.

craftyzits, I too remember using a lot of ibuprofen after appliance adjustment or archwire tightening. I don't miss those days for sure!
