More proof that "Who'll take care of you when you're old" is a crock

We were poking around the thrift store the other day and found a gorgeous, hand-calligraphed award that someone had earned back in the 60s. It was framed nicely and obviously meant a lot to the original owner at one time. The name of the recipient was unusual, so I googled him. He died a few months ago. He left behind two grown children and 8 grandchildren. And apparently he meant so little to them that this beautiful award wound up at a thrift shop for $5.

I want to wave stuff like this at people who think we're going to die forgotten and unloved. "Leaving a legacy" in the form of your DNA doesn't guarantee that you won't do the same.

So true. I love going thrifting and finding old relics like that and giving them some love by taking them home. It's so cool to have something from the past that was special to someone. Clearly the person didn't have anyone in their lives who gave a crap about their elder and just discarded something that should have had a personal meaning to them. I couldn't bear to do that.

People don't seem to have that same sense of nostalgia that they used to. It reminds me of all the old folks who are left to rot in nursing homes without a single visit from their kids or grandkids. Nobody really matters unless they're under the age of 18.

It would be far less painful to be in a nursing home knowing you don't have any family around. I think it would be much, much wore knowing that there are people out there who could visit but just don't.

It probably wound up at the thrift store because the person's kids and grandkids couldn't sell it for money. I saw something maybe last month about someone on Antiques Roadshow having their late relative's Olympic medals appraised. I couldn't imagine selling something like that, unless I was in very VERY dire financial straits because imagine the effort and work that went into winning those! It might have been an older video that I just happened to find recently, but the point is most people will not keep things like that for sentimental value. They just want to make a buck.

I never got anything like this from any deceased relatives myself. The closest I got was a sock full of pre-1964 half dollar coins from my great aunt as a kid that I sold years later for much more than face value because I waited for the price of silver to go up after finding the sock again. But there was no sentimental value attached to those coins. I think that was just my aunt not knowing those coins were worth more than 50 cents each and just giving her grand-niece a little pocket change for her piggy bank. Or she DID know they were worth more and wanted me to have them for that reason. No idea!

I like thrifting too and I laugh at the number of things I see in the realm of single halves of "Best Friends" necklaces and "World's Best Grandma/Grandpa/Mom/Dad/Sister/Brother" mugs or shirts at thrift stores. Clearly the recipient disagreed with the giver's opinion of them. tongue sticking out smiley
It can get worse than thrift stores.

My heart breaks when I see these bio(hazard) legaceeeees THROWING OUT antiques owned by their deceased family members.

Looks like many of them are too braindead to even think as far as trying to earn a buck with them so they let them go to waste immediately, destroying pieces of history in the process.
There were multiple instances where acquaintances and I saved, for example, gorgeous, functioning grammophones (and even a fucking jazz guitar!!!), that someone's pweshuuuus omlette had carelessly thrown out onto the curb for the bulk waste truck.

Ain't gonna happen with me. My childfree antiques and instruments will go to selected vintage stores or museums.

on the other side of the coin, sometimes parents are dumped in nursing homes and avoided because they were nasty, toxic, abusive pieces of shit.

When my aunt recently passed away, I couldn't get to the mainland to take some of the stuff that my aunt wanted me to have from her house and my sister and her idiot husband tossed out so much stuff that was valuable.

One thing I really wanted was a painting that my aunt loved. After I told my sister that I was going to arrange to have it delivered here, she put it in the church thrift store. I made her go back to the church to get it. I was so mad. She did, reluctantly, and it now hangs proudly on my wall. It was my aunt's favorite painting and it's really beautiful. I also got her antique table which is absolutely gorgeous, sitting in my living room. She wanted to toss it and I think I actually threatened her if she did that.

My family sees little to no value in older stuff and thinks it's garbage. I'm the opposite and my whole house is done up in antiques. It's fitting because it's a character home and it suits the vibe.

After I croak, everything I have left will be donated to animal charities.
