Scurvy cases tripled in the span of four years
September 04, 2024
I mean it only increased from 8 cases per 100,000 brats to 27, but still WTF why do we have an increase in a fucking medieval nutritional disease in the 2020s??

One theory is the increase in the number of awtards, which makes sense. These neuro-fucked brats with every autistic spectrum illness known to the DSM have all their fucking food/sensory issues and eat three "safe" foods their entire lives, it's no surprise they might be more susceptible to scurvy. Apparently, 65 PERCENT of cases of brat scurvy occur in awtards!

Another potential factor is quite possibly the number of premature births, which can increase the likelihood of developmental delays, which also increases the odds of disordered eating habits.

So I wonder, if scurvy cases continue to rise more and more, will there be pushes to add supplemental vitamin C into more processed foods so that picky brats won't develop scurvy?

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-13762963/Ancient-disease-scurvy-comeback-children-causing-pain-teeth-fall-out.html

Quote

An ancient disease linked to malnutrition is on the rise among American children, 'troubling' data shows.

The rate of scurvy - which can cause teeth to fall out and extreme pain - tripled between 2016 and 2020, from around eight in every 100,000 kids to nearly 27.

The condition is caused by a lack of Vitamin C from fruit and vegetables, which is essential to keep skin, blood vessels and ligaments healthy.

Millions of children in rural America live in food deserts — neighborhoods where there is limited access to healthy, fresh food — who are especially vulnerable.

But while diet has is a major contributor to scurvy, experts say there are other factors in play - including rising rates of autism in minors.

Scurvy can be traced to as far back as 3,800 BC Egypt.

In modern history, scurvy was documented in the 1500s and more than 2million sailors died from the condition between the 16th and 18th centuries.

It was thought to have disappeared in the 1900s once it was discovered that eating a more well-balanced seemed to prevent it.

But it had a resurgence in the 1970s when the American diet became more carb-based and less dependent on fresh fruits and vegetables, according to the National Library of Medicine.

Scurvy is caused by a long-term lack of vitamin C, a vital nutrient for tissue growth and wound healing. It's found in citrus fruits, potatoes, red and chili peppers, strawberries and tomatoes.

The vitamin is needed to make collagen, a major building block for the skin, bones, ligaments, blood, muscles and cartilage.

Without vitamin C, the body cannot make enough collagen or heal as quickly, which leads to bleeding gums and loosened teeth, scaly skin, brittle hair, bleeding underneath the skin, muscle fatigue, anemia and bruising.

Scurvy can also cause swollen legs and pain so severe children may refuse to walk.

In 2022, 17 percent of American households with children faced food insecurity — a 40 percent increase from the previous year, the USDA reported.

More than half a million deaths per year are linked to nutritional deficiencies.

But Dr Stephanie Gilley from Children’s Hospital Colorado told DailyMail.com there were other reasons for the scurvy increase.

She said: ‘I also think that there are more children who are having severe neurodevelopmental disorders.

‘As we have more premature infants who are surviving earlier, like 23 or 24 weeks of gestation — which normal is 40 weeks so that's quite early — the more children are at higher risk of things like cerebral palsy or other delays in their development and that can also be associated with eating difficulties.’

Premature birth rates have been increasing in America over the past decade.

While there is no known exact cause of why women go into preterm labor, there are several factors women may have that could increase the likelihood.

These include being a teen or woman over 35 years old, having a lower income, belonging to a minority demographic, having a history of early births, being pregnant with twins, triplets or more, suffering from certain comorbidities and using drugs or tobacco during pregnancy.

Environmental factors such as pollution and climate change and lack of prenatal care can also led to an early birth.

Dr Gilley has treated five patients with scurvy over the past four years and analyzed 47 cases at Children’s Hospital Colorado from 2003 to 2022.

She was looking for symptom trends and discovered half the patients had a neurodevelopmental disorder.

Food insecurity was not the main risk factor in those cases.

Dr Gilley said: ‘There's lots of processed foods that tend to be less expensive, that can have vitamin C in it. The needs for children are very low, especially as toddlers.

‘We know that food insecurity definitely contributes to the way people eat but in our cohort in Colorado, we did not see that.’

The main cause of scurvy Dr Gilley saw was picky eating habits.

She also did not observe any patterns in weight.

She said: ‘There were some children who were underweight, there were some children who were normal weight and then there were some children who had high BMI in the overweight or obese category.’

Additionally, children with autism spectrum disorder account for 65 percent of scurvy cases, according to the study by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

Dr Eduard Fatakhov from the Center for Internal and Integrative Medicine told DailyMail.com: ‘The relationship between nutrition and ASD symptoms is very complex.

'Children with ASD exhibit nutritional problems such as food selectivity, limited food intake and behavioral problems during mealtimes.’

Doctors often see scurvy as a ‘disease of the past’ and overlook its symptoms, Dr Fatakhov added.

Dr Gilley advised parents to ‘advocate’ for their children at the doctor’s office if they do not have a well-rounded diet to ensure they get the necessary nutrients.

She said: ‘If your child is not eating something from all the food groups, they’re at risk of vitamin and mineral deficiencies.’

However, Dr Eduard Fatakhov from the Center for Internal and Integrative Medicine told DailyMail.com that produce is progressively becoming less nutritious, meaning even those who have access to good food are at risk.

He said: ‘There’s an increase in scurvy because farming changes decrease vitamin C.’

Modern industrial farming practices drain soil of its nutrients 1,000 times faster than they can be restored, the American Center for Nutrition reported, and the amount of vitamin C and overall nutritional value of fruits, vegetables and grains has dropped since the 1950s.

And the lack of access to food could make it hard for Americans to keep a balanced diet.

You'd think there'd be far more nutritional deficit disorders considering they aren't made to eat more than chicken nuggets and macaroni.
Re: Scurvy cases tripled in the span of four years

I mean there probably are, but scurvy is specifically a vitamin C deficiency. There is no way these brats that subsist entirely on 2-3 foods and nothing else are getting all their necessary nutrients, unless they can manage to get things like nutritional shakes into their systems.

But the parents claim they "can't" make their kids eat, and if they refuse to constantly feed their brats their "safe" foods, the brats will just plain not eat. They're probably too worried about having CPS called on them for neglect instead of having a little willpower and waiting for the kid to get hungry enough to eat something else. Because I'm pretty sure 99 percent of these picky fuckers would step outside their precious awtarded comfort zones and eat something new when they are denied access to the slop they normally eat.

I've heard many Moos on r/breakingmoo say that "fed is best" when it comes to dealing with picky eaters. And yes, eating something is better than eating nothing. But vitamin deficiencies can be dangerous sometimes. Is "fed is best" going to prevent a kid from needing IV nutrition because they are deficient in every single vitamin from years of eating chicken tenders and fries and nothing else?
Re: Scurvy cases tripled in the span of four years

I was wondering if we were going to see an increase in malnutrition-related illnesses since the MO seems to be to just give in instead of coming up with ways to get proper nutrition in these kids. And adult autistics and ARFIDs support not forcing kids to eat foods they don't like because they're so traumatized from having to eat anything that deviated from their "safe" foods. In about 20 years, we're going to see young adults with serious health problems because of childhood malnutrition and having to teach themselves how to eat. Imagine entering adulthood with organ damage, eyesight issues, a weakened immune system, etc. They're being set up for a lifetime of poor health and debt because they didn't want to eat broccoli.

Oh absolutely. Not getting vital nutrition during the time in your life when you are still growing/developing is going to lead to major problems later in life, some of which may not be fixable.

Like rickets, which I learned is a vitamin D deficiency. I've heard that term before, but I didn't know what caused it. Rickets can cause insufficient bone development as well as heart problems. Meaning a kid will be much more prone to bone injuries/fractures/breaks. With how little these fuckers go outside in favor of being babysat by a screen, they can't even get their vitamin D from the sun.

That's just the tip of the iceberg because every part of the body can be affected by malnutrition. Vision, blood, dental, neurological, digestive, mental, cardiac, skin, bone, immune, you name it.

I also wonder if these picky fuckers will wind up severely overweight from subsisting off shit food their whole lives, or severely underweight from eating two foods and turning their noses up at anything else. I wouldn't be surprised if they are more prone to diabetes eating such trash.

And when these brats become adults, absolutely NO ONE is going to cater to their finicky bullshit, eating disorder or not. Not relatives, not spouses, not professors, not doctors, nobody. Assuming the kids live to adulthood. I figure some of the particularly headstrong ones might die of malnutrition in childhood.

The parents are doing them a huge disservice by not trying harder to make them eat new things. Unfortunately, parents think they are "in the trenches" and will always choose the path of least resistance instead of getting off their asses and doing the jobs they signed up for. So they are perfectly happy to let their kids eat shit if it means they will eat and/or there will be no tantrums. It's a nice fix short-term, but the kids are going to be the ones who suffer long-term.

Also, what happens when one of these brats' two or three "safe" foods is discontinued? Like if they only eat a certain brand of chicken tenders, what happens when those chicken tenders stop getting made? What happens if ALL their safe foods become no longer accessible? Do they just die? Or will they eat something new out of desperation? If it's the latter, could parents not just lie and say, "Oop sorry Fucklina, your favorite Pop Tarts/chicken nuggets/0% juice drink aren't made anymore. Guess you'll have to eat something else?"

this is what happens when babies, who ordinarily would have died. are allowed to live.. and pass on their genes.everyone has an excuse as to why bratleigh needed this or that intervention for x or y problem to save their life. however, at least 88 percent of these problems that would take these babies out is due to some defective gene somewhere. this 'save the baby at all costs' started almost 100 years ago.. and given exponential growth, it isn't surprising there is now a total explosion of defective children.

I do not have problems with trying to have children live their lives as best as they are able. I do have a problem with allowing them to breed.

The 'fed is best' crowd is rather sanctimonious about it too. Parunts who also were mollycoddled in the last couple decades cant fathom having rules for their kids whatsoever. Their doctors will just support their stupid ideas, bcz if they say anything to them, the parents will complain online to their pals that they 'were shamed' by doctor, and just go to a new pediatrician. That's how we got here, with scurvy.

That makes sense. While I agree that bedside manner should be a thing given how much it fucking costs to see a doctor, I also hate that many of them will outright refuse to be honest with patients when honesty is sorely needed. Like how people who are obese who suffer from ailments caused by their obesity will not get told their weight is the issue or to lose weight, thanks to the HAES/fat acceptance movements.

Parents especially need medical tough love because they know if they just scream loud enough, they will get their own way. Breeders are the same ones who will haul their brats to the ER for antibiotics for a simple cold and doctors will give them a Z-Pack to make them go away. Breeders are the ones who refuse to parent their brats whatsoever so they can get an autism diagnosis and drug their bratty kids into behaving. Breeders are the ones who will doctor shop until they get a provider who validates them instead of telling them what they need to hear.

Doctors are too worried about bad reviews and/or loss of business now, so they will just say shit like, "Ohh as long as Junior eats something, he's A-okay!" I mean sure, that's fine compared to being dead, but parents need to get told that their dumbass fucking awtards need to eat more than chicken nuggets and Kraft mac and cheese so they don't wind up with severe and dangerous nutrient deficiencies and that not making them eat more will warrant a call to CPS.

But parents would much rather be lazy pieces of shit than do their jobs. It's no skin off their noses because their brats' awful diets and behaviors don't have any long-lasting impact on the parents themselves. The kids will be the one to suffer.

There are ways to hide fruit and veg in autard's food, it does take SOME effort through.

yep, a bit more work, but paruunts would swear they "never knew" it would be so haaarrdd! Pretty simple, really, to puree some veggies and mix them into the spaghetti sauce. Or make chicken patties with mashed veggies inside. The wife of Jerry Seinfeld , who I dislike, made a whole book or video about doing a mass cook and puree of all sorts of veggies to freeze and mix in with various "kid approved" food. Would that be Deceptively Delicious, by chance? I've seen that book before in thrift stores and it's stuff like how to hide shit like pureed beets in brownies. There are other similar books too, such as the Sneaky Chef.

These recipes could even be good for adults who want to get more fruits and vegetables in their diets. I've heard some people say pureed carrots in tomato sauce is a "hack" for a sweeter, more flavorful sauce. I've made brownies out of pumpkin and sweet potato that were pretty tasty too. Not necessarily because I needed more vegetables because I already eat them frequently, but I was looking for healthier alternatives to full-sugar brownies (LOL they were still 340 calories each, but also I made each piece the size of my hand). Baby food can be thrown into smoothies for additional nutrients too since it's nothing but water and fruit/vegetables.

Unfortunately, such things might not work with awtards, especially if their "safe" foods are pre-made and/or processed slop like chicken nuggets. They're retarded in every single other way, but I'd wager they are just smart enough to notice when their food has been fucked with and would refuse to eat it.

The tards probably have some bullshit sensory issue with the texture or flavor. I've heard of some of these picky fucks at least being willing to drink Pediasure shakes, but they might decide they don't want a vitamin tablet because it "looks itchy" or some shit. Or the parents just don't even try because they assume Junior won't eat it.

Because at least with tards, they always seem to have this mile-long list of horse shit food rules like their food can't be touching, can't be red, can't be crunchy, can't be warm, can't be spicy, can't feel "rough," can't be mushy, can't be orange on Tuesdays and Saturdays, they need a different fork for each food, and all kinds of other nonsense parents accommodate because they don't want to deal with meltdowns.

Then when their teeth all fall out from scurvy, it'll be extra fun trying to feed their asses.

That likely wouldnt work, that book went to the sale bin pretty fast, the dollar store, and yard sales. I read another book about the journey of living the Oprah life, and that included everything her guests hawked on her show. The author made some of the Seinfeld 'treats' for an adult party, and she said the people took a bite and much was left on the sides of the plates. If adults cant enjoy these sneaky treats, I doubt kyds and autards could.

This is more due to the fact that anybody with any sort of fame or adjacent to fame can get a cookbook deal. Ninety percent of food bloggers are plagiarists but get away with it because they claim "adapted," and most celebrities don't actually know how to cook basic meals, let alone the more complicated concept of sneaking vegetables into food and still making it taste good. You can't just throw a beet into something and call it good. For example, beets have a very distinctive and strong earthy flavor (I say they taste like dirt) and won't be easily masked.

Anyway, it's not a great idea to sneak vegetables into kids' food because it's not going to teach them to eat vegetables. Jose Andrés, the America's Test Kitchen crew, and other reputable cooks/chefs have come out with cookbooks dedicated to vegetables recently. Learn how to properly cook vegetables and kids tend to be more receptive to eating them. How many people grew up thinking they hated vegetables and it turned out their parents just boiled the veggies to death?

I'm convinced that a majority of people of any age who say they hate vegetables have probably never had them cooked properly before. Kids who hate all vegetables probably get served the shit from cans after it's been cooked to a colorless mush by parents who don't know WTF they're doing. Or they only ever had vegetables in cans, which can be okay, but they aren't always as good as fresh.

I bet they would like healthy things more if they were cooked right. Roasted vegetables are delicious and super easy to make - 400 degree oven, toss veggies with oil, roast on a sheet pan for 20 minutes and flip them half way. Baked potatoes are awesome. Sauteed vegetables are fast and tasty. So many people who don't have basic cooking skills will absolutely ruin perfectly good vegetables and then you get kids who grow up into adults that are proud to say they never eat vegetables.
