Independent thought alarm!!!
October 05, 2010
So I'm a member of an online group for people with a certain serious illness, it's an open forum for people with said illness to discuss life, their disease, treatments, doctors, how to cope, etc.
Today a woman expressed her very valid opinion with which I whole heartedly agree that people with serious illnesses should not reproduce and run the risk of passing on their defective genes to their potential offspring.
The breeders came out in force and she was lamb basted for her opinion.
It was so bad she actually left the group after being a member for more than 2 years.
Are people really that stupid and selfish to make a baybee with at least a 10% chance of developing the same life threatening condition their parents have??? WTF is wrong with people?face saying 'error'r

Hell, I've watched documentaries where the baby had a 50% chance or more of being born with the genetic defect of the parents and they rolled the dice anyways. Sometimes it was in hopes that the next one wouldn't carry the gene.

Like these igit brain breeders never thought of adoption. It wasn't like she said they couldn't be parents at all. eye rolling smiley Breeders sure have some fuzzy logic. the world 'fail' on flames

It is completely beyond belief to me how, if you suffer a horrific condition which is inheritable, you could take even the slightest chance of having someone you love have the condition. My conditions are not so horrific, and nonetheless, I would not wish them on anyone I care about. That is effectively what people are doing when they have children despite a high risk of passing on some unpleasant condition: they are doing to those they love what most people claim they wouldn't wish on their worst enemies.

yes

because they think they are the other 90%

You've all pretty much covered how I feel about knowingly inflicting a condition upon the next generation. What I find really sad about the post is that someone who the group was intended for had to leave after 2 years because breeders can't resist making EVERYTHING about breeding. They couldn't go to one of the umpteen moomy or duhddy boards to go on about this, they had to attack a member of a board for the medical condition.

Bree Walker being one of the most egregious examples

Seems a bit hypocritical that she would wholly embrace the physical defects she was born with, but let a few wrinkles appear and she heads off to get some spectacularly bad plastic surgery

Euh, if Bree's condition is (a) not something she is embarrassed about, and (b) doesn't diminish her functionally, as most disability advocates would claim (arguing that the problem is public perception and that things are not 'adapted' to them), then why the fuck have her children had "dozens of operations" to fix their hands?

I wonder how many of those moos (and, by proxy, duhs) on that board actually had a secret abortion ("the only moral abortion is my abortion") while they hypocritically harp on someone who dissents?
Re: Independent thought alarm!!!

I've either personally known or read news stories about people with horrible GENETIC diseases who insisted on breeding. Years ago I worked with a woman who had the same condition as Bree Walker (I remember her even saying this). This woman had 3 kids, two of which ended up with the deformities.

Back when I was doing medical transcription, I transcribed a report on a woman with cystic fibrosis (GENETIC) who was preggo and getting OB treatment for her "high-risk pregnancy."

I've heard of several stories where people with forms of muscular dystrophy (GENETIC) insist on spinning the Roulette wheel by breeding.

Same for people with forms of dwarfism (GENETIC), such as those horrible people in that "Little People" reality show.

(There was that quadriplegic woman who insisted on getting knocked up. Even though she was selfish in other ways, at least her condition was not genetic.)

There is absolutely NOTHING more selfish than insisting on breeding when you have these conditions. Anyone who would so much as risk passing on these truly awful diseases to an innocent child is a narcissist of the greatest proportions.

I've been reluctant to say something as bold as this woman had for a long time in this particular forum, (she likened reproducing with a chance of passing our disease on to child abuse) thumbs upwink but have always maintained my position that no further people should be produced with ANY serious illness if the parents know it's a possibility.
There is a whole section of the forum devoted to "female issues" which is of course code for "I wanna have a baybeeee!" filled with stories of miscarriages, IVF failures, etc that I have to steer clear of lest I go postal and tell the selfish cows what I really think!the world 'fail' on flames
I'm sad that a long standing member was caused to scurry off with her tail between her legs for saying what we here are all thinking.
This world is fucked up when baybee rabies overtakes common sense for a kids future health, some families are MEANT to die out FFS.:crz

In addition to being amazingly smart, I think we here were born without the psycho-baby gene. The one that overrides rational thought, and tells one to "go forth and breed, at any cost!"

I do not and never will comprehend the overwhelming need to self replicate at all costs. I also don't understand why people get SO upset if anyone even hints that it is WRONG to reproduce when a devastating health condition is KNOWN to be hereditary. Where do people get the idea that it is a RIGHT, or an obligation even, to reproduce regardless of the chances, which are often GREAT, that they will pass on undesirable, dangerous, and often deadly traits? Where is that part of them that cries out, "I wouldn't want anyone who I love to suffer as I have"?confused smiley

God I hope so.

For me the idea that maybe my mother (and others) are right and I do have a ticking bomb inside me that will go off one day and make me go baby crazy is as scary as having the house burn down or drowning.

I'm starting to believe it's probably all bullshit though. bouncing and laughing

What gets to me is the genetic thing.
Not that I'm proposing it or anything, but do you think they'd honestly notice if their baby was swapped at birth?
If not, and I doubt it personally, then that makes a mockery of the whole having one of your own, surely?

Why not adopt? Too many unwanted people in the world, and if there is a chance of passing on a serious condition to them then surely it makes even more sense!

I guess I just don't get it. confused smiley

Did you happen to see the article in "Parade" a few weeks back where this severely handicapped moo was showing off her "miracle" brats? I forget the exact details, but she had been in a wheelchair since the age of seven because of a horrible genetic disease that destroyed her bones. Moo and duh decided not to be tested for the disease because it "wouldn't matter" when it came to breeding. How selfish can you get?
BTW, I'm a young cancer survivor. Before I had chemo, I had multiple health care providers ask me about freezing my eggs. This, shortly after having been told that I had a 35% chance of survival, with treatment. Luckily, I ended up having a stem cell transplant, which not only saved my life, but had the welcome side effect of permanent infertility. I was happily CF before I got sick, but I often get comments about how sad I must be that I can't breed. Please!

Catsnotbrats, that's what gets me so angry about doctors today, they STILL treat your fertility as the highest priority. It makes me sick.

It makes me sick, too. Which is why I LOVE my current specialist. She doesn't think of me as an incubator, but as a female. When I'm ready, she's willing to do the hysterectomy for my endometriosis. Nice. The last doctor only saw me as an possible incubator, it was irritating.

OMG, for some reason, this popped into my head earlier today. I was wondering, with all the money she spent fucking up her face, why didn't she fix her damn hands?!

You know, there is a fine line between being optimistic and being delusional, and these breeders have pole vaulted way over it. Nevermind them spawning when they know that there is a pretty good chance that their kid is going to inherit some God-awful disorder. What about the ones that keep popping out defecto-brats hoping for one that's normal? It sickens me.

Maybe they just want to hear Ty Pennington's screaming ass outside their living room window that damn bad. I dunno.
