Woman with learning difficulties can decide own pregnancy fate, court rules

A court decided that a woman who has sickle cell disease (a hereditary condition) which has led to strokes, which in turn lead to learning disabilities so severe that she cannot function independently (and is in the bottom 1% of the population in terms of intellectual functioning) is able to make her own choice about whether to continue her pregnancy or not.

A choice she is, along with many parunts, not fit to make.

Here is a disturbing comment from the story: "Towards the end of last year she discovered she was pregnant and the matter was brought to the attention of the court. There was a belief that the father was known, but it would not be right for the court to make any observation about that, the judge said."

If her intellectual functioning was so bad that she was effectively a ward of the court then, she was a victim of rape because it would have been impossible for her to give meaningful consent to intercourse. If her jurisdiction in the south of Britain makes it possible, the father's identity should be confirmed and he should be prosecuted.

Note that the story does not clarify (unless I missed something) which way the woman is leaning concerning terminating the pregnancy. Given her medical and intellectual problems, abortion is a must in her situation. Is someone trying to force her to bear the child against her desires? More info would be warranted.

The woman can't make the most basic decisions but she CAN decide to keep a pregnancy and raise a baby??? It's official. The inmates are running the asylum.

And this is okay because as every breeder knows, a baby doesn't feel pain. Unless it's being aborted, and then it becomes the most sarcred life that ever existed -- capable of feeling every pain and human emotion and complex thought to the nth degree.wink

Oh, good, so she can pass on Sickle Cell to her offspring. Great idea.
