I went to the park, alone, since my eight birthday. People should get a grip, it is far easier that your best friend will rape your kid than a stranger in a park smile rolling left righteyes2

“I was talking about children that have not been properly house-trained. Left to their own impulses and indulged by doting or careless parents almost all children are yahoos. Loud, selfish, cruel, unaffectionate, jealous, perpetually striving for attention, empty-headed, for ever prating or if words fail them simply bawling, their voices grown huge from daily practice: the very worst company in the world. But what I dislike even more than the natural child is the affected child, the hulking oaf of seven or eight that skips heavily about with her hands dangling in front of her -- a little squirrel or bunny-rabbit -- and prattling away in a baby's voice.”

People are fucking crazy these days...so if I had a kyd, I wouldn't let him/her go to the park alone. Will all the kidnapping that goes on in America, I wouldn't take any chances. I wouldn't hover over the kyd on the playground, but letting him/her walk alone, not happening. I keep thinking of those three kidnapped girls in Ohio, Jaycee Dugard, Elizabeth Smart , and anyone else who was snatched by a stranger. NO, kids may not necessarily be taken at the park itself, but more likely on their way there.

I think becoming a parent amplifies peoples' assholery. What ever kind of jerk they were before - popping sprogs seems to be some kind of reason to turn the volume of it up to 11.

I just scanned the comments, they all seemed polarized, either 'for' or 'against'.

A common sense mid ground was missing.

OK, so you can't let your kid cross multiple highways to get to a park. Did it not occur to you to find a closer one? Or a school with play ground equipment they could go to after hours?
Or, joining a group of parents to swap minding chores at the park? Or if the child is older - giving it instructions as to how to get home, emergency money, phone #s to call, etc.

Simple solutions and compromises seem to elude these people. They go straight to their bleating and whining justifications. And of course their kids turn out the same. Unable to use reason and logic to come up with a workable solution.
