HOBBS, N.M. (KRQE) - A teacher's aide at an elementary school is facing child charges over an off-campus weekend soccer game where things got out of control.

It started as any other Saturday at the Martin Luther King Soccerplex in Hobbs. But when a couple of parents noticed a coach yelling profanities along the sidelines, the situation escalated into a soccer-mom brawl.

"Oftentimes in child sports the parents get very involved and lose their tempers," said Officer Mike Stone of the Hobbs Police Department.

Hobbs police say two moms started fist-fighting with one another about the coach's language. Then, according to police reports, a 7-year-old boy tried to intervene to protect his mother.

That's when Aimet Widman, 30, punched the boy in the stomach and shoved him away, police reported.

The problems didn't end there. Widman works at the elementary school the boy attends.

"It's unfortunate that it happened to a school employee, but until the investigation has been completed and a finding has occurred," said Hobbs Municipal Schools Assistant Superintendent William Hawkins. "We are not going to prematurely jump into a situation."

As the investigation continues, Widman is still working at Sanger Elementary School.
