Friends of a widow beaten to death and stuffed in a suitcase at a Bali resort say they warned her not to take her troublesome teenage daughter along on the dream vacation.

The news comes as it emerged police had been called to victim Sheila von Wiese Mack's suburban Chicago home some 86 times to break up fights between the wealthy academic and her daughter, Heather Mack, 19, a college drop out who was 'hanging out with a bad crowd' and had recently moved into a hotel.

The two had an often tempestuous relationship, recalled close friend Mark Bacharach, and had been fighting prior to the vacation at the luxury St. Regis hotel on the Indonesian island resort.

But Mrs Mack tracked down her daughter, and despite the fact she 'barely recognized her anymore' the two set off on the 10-day-plus trip to the other side of the globe, where the 62-year-old ultimately met a grisly end.

Ms Mack and her boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, 21, were arrested in connection with the murder early Wednesday morning. They have not been charged.

'She tried to hope when it came [to Heather],' Mr Bacharach told NBC News. 'That was my friend's most outstanding characteristic.

'At least four or five of us would say to kick her out. She was hanging out with a bad crowd. But Sheila always took her back. [Heather] could be as charming and self-effacingly sweet one minute, and then a vicious little monster the next.'

Well, lets hope that the bleeding hearts don't start donating money and whining about "cruel and unusual punishment" and "human rights violations" and trying to get her to be tried and serve her sentence in a cushy American prison with free education, healthcare, three hots, and a cot courtesy of the taxpayers. She committed the ultimate cruel and unusual punishment and human rights violation by viciously beating her mother to death and stuffing the body into a suitcase during a luxury vacation on said mother's dime.

Though I wonder, with boredom being rampant in an Indonesian prison, why not put them to work doing crap jobs or be lab rats in medical and cosmetic experiments?

An insight into the family background and Ms Mack’s psychological problems has come from a writer to the Jakarta Post who said she was the same age as Heather, having been friends with her for years.

'Heather has always been a very disturbed girl. She was extremely spoiled and would often scream and throw things until she got her way,' the writer said.

'In 2006, Sheila and her husband were vacationing on a cruise ship when something went wrong and her husband cut his foot due to negligence. Sheila sued the cruise ship and won a sizeable amount of money.

'Heather became even crazier with the newly-inherited millions.'

This is a chilling case, but a few things do make me wonder. First of all, the name James L Mack rang a bell and upon googling it I found this:

So duhddy was 66 when this girl was born, and moo was 43. Apart from that, duh had five other chyldrun. Now I could still somehow (not really) understand if the girl had been the very-much-longed-for only child if moo and duh both had been 43, sort of like a last-ditch attempt to have offspring by two intelligent, wealthy and educated people. But to father a chyld at 66? When you already have five others? Sorry but that takes vanity and selfishness to a whole new level. It seems as if it was a case of 'look. dick and oven are both still working'. eyes2

Secondly, if a parent is so stupid that they let it get to the point where the police visit on 86 separate occasions, the kyds should be taken into care and the offending parent carted off to a mental hospital. These were not poor people, they could have afforded to send her to boarding school if she was so hard to handle.

I find it strange that the girl left an extremely badly written message on twitter, usually people who come from 'good' backgrounds tend to write more or less correctly, even when they're trying to be 'gangsta'. Duh died when she was 10, maybe that was a shock to her. Maybe her mother treated her badly. There must've been something going on if she wrote that 'I refuse to let someone tell me what to do'. Parents who are wealthy and educated can be the worst when it comes to basic human psychology. I know because mine were like that, and while I never had the desire to kill either of them and even got on well with my mom in her final years I still resent so many things they did to me that were unnecessary and cruel. The insults and taunts are something I will never forget, the constant critique of my appearance ('When I was your age, I had flawless skin, but yours is full of spots', 'I was prettier than you at the same age' etc), the fact that I was forbidden to learn to drive, only allowed to listen to classical music (when I started listening to what I wanted you would've thought I was doing something criminal) and, and, and. The only thing they knew to do was to give me money to shut me up. I've always gladly taken it beause I think I earned it. If you want to insult me, it's gonna cost you something. It most definitely won't be free.

I'm not saying that this girl doesn't have mental issues but I wonder whether the moo might be in large measure responsible for them. Just my two cents.
