Honestly, what on earth possesses people to burden their children with such horrible names? OK, granted Hooker is the last name and nothing can be done about that, but for god's sake, at least pick a less slutty first name! The last name is bad enough.

How much do you want to bet this girl changes her first name to Jane or Martha and gets married really young so she can take her husband's name?

When she's 18, she could always just change her full name without having to get married. That's what I'd do if I were stuck with an unfortunate name like that.

But jeez...I agree that with such a last name, the parents should have at least given her a normal first name, to make it not sound so bad. A name like Elizabeth Hooker would at least be taken seriously on a college or job application. Destinee Hooker would only be taken seriously if she were applying for a job at a brothel or a strip joint.

I've heard that in some countries, there are laws that say what one can or can't name their kids. Maybe we need such a law here in the U.S.

Although there are no laws in the United Kingdom relating to unsuitable names, there are restrictions we impose on what you can change your name to.

We will not accept an order for a Deed Poll for a name that:

is impossible to pronounce,
includes numbers or symbols,

includes punctuation marks - although you can have a hyphen to link forenames or surnames (for example, if you want a double-barrelled surname) and an apostrophe in the case of surnames like O'Brien.
we consider vulgar, offensive, blasphemous or unsuitable,
may result in others believing you have a conferred or inherited honour, title or rank, for example, a change of first name to Sir, Lord, Lady, Prince, Princess, Baron, Baroness, Count, Countess, General, Colonel etc.,
does not include at least one forename and one surname.
Other than the above restrictions, you can change your forenames, surname (or both), add names, remove names or rearrange your existing names. You can change your name at any time and for any reason provided it is not for deceptive or fraudulent purposes or for the avoidance of an obligation.

Copyright and trade mark protection of names
There is no copyright or trade mark protection for people's names. Therefore, if you want to call yourself Elton John for everyday use, you can. However, you cannot use your new name if it results in passing-off or deception. For example, if you changed your name to Elton John and you published music and/or lyrics in that name, you will probably find yourself subject to trade mark infringement legal action by the artist Elton John on the grounds that you are passing yourself off as him.

Fun names
Some people like the idea of having what we call a fun name. We have issued Deed Polls for fun names such as Jellyfish McSaveloy, Toasted T Cake, Nineteen Sixty-Eight, Hong Kong Phooey, Father Christmas, One-One-Eight Taxi, Ting A Ling, Huggy Bear, Donald Duck, Jojo Magicspacemonkey and James Bond.

If you are considering a fun name and belong to a professional body, you should check to ensure there will be no problems registering your new name with them.

We reserve the right to refuse an application for a fun name from a person who is under 18 years of age.

i dont know if you know this, but hookers are named after a person..

During the Civil War, General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Hooker of the
Union Army, decided to help morale by letting prostitutes have access
to his troops. These prostitutes quickly became known as "Hooker's
girls." Later, a section of Washington was set aside for brothels, and
it was called "Hooker's Division." The prostitutes in the area called
themselves "hookers."

but destinee,

Chances are ol' Destinee will be just fine with her name. After teaching for 16 years, I've noticed that girls named Destinee, or any of its various spellings, are very much like their brilliant parents in the intelligence department. Solid, sensible names like Elizabeth or Mary would only hinder her chances of one day having the strip club job of her dreams. I know this sounds mean, but I honestly can't think of one girl named Destinee that I've taught who didn't come from a white trash family.

I notice the white trash women tend to use the double "e's" when naming their female children. Instead of Ashley, it is "Ashlee". Destiny turns into "Destinee", which I have seen a lot! Kathy/Cathy is "Kathee/Cathee".

A young unmarried moo-to-be I know is going to name her baby the overused "Jaeden" for her infant. It does sound so single moo-ish. I do notice how the single moms tend to want those Kree-8-tivv-uh names for their kids

Mercurior, that was very interesting about the origins of the name "hooker".

I think the girl will probably face a lot of ridicule anyway from her last name alone. But why the parents gave the girl a name that suits her surname so well is beyond me. No one is ever going to take her seriously with a name like that; her name sounds like some kind of super hero porno.

Someone help me if they can - I read somewhere that it costs $2000+ to legally change your name. Is this true?

I think the cost of a name change depends on where you live. In my area it's only about $500.

On the upside for ol' Destinee, at least she won't have to do alot of work on her sex work resume. All she really has to do is put her name on it.

there's actually a section in the best selling book "freakanomics" about stupid baby names. One parent had actually named his children Winner and Loser (and ironically Loser went on to become a police officer while Winner became a loser). One moo named her child temptress and when asked why, she said she liked the girl from the cosby show (who was named TEMPEST).

Another problem with the name "Destinee"--is it pronounced like "destiny" with the Es making an eeee sound or is it like "destinay" with the Es making the sound like they do in the name Renee?

I've noticed that lately, for the "eeee" sound in names, the "eigh" spelling is becoming popular, or at least was a few years ago. I even saw a kid with that spelling for the eeee sound in the middle of her name...I can't remember what her name actually was, but it was the equivalent of naming your kid Teighna (for Tina) or Aleighsha (for Alisha).

Is a name change really that expensive? Wow, I had no idea. I've been meaning to change mine for a while, but maybe I won't. (I just want to change it from Katie to Katharine since I'm tired of people asking is my name short for Katherine or Kathleen, and since it sounds more adult than Katie does. For that small of a change though, maybe I'll go with the "just start using the new name" route rather than the legal way of doing it--the only reason I wanted to do it the legal way was so I could have Katharine on all of my legal papers like work documents, driver's license, and such and I would imagine one would have to change one's name legally to be able to do that even if it's just such a small change like I want. Anyone happen to know the legality behind that? I can't seem to find that sort of info anywhere)

Some states will let you change it by usage, like California, but some will only accept legal changes, like Texas. You can call the courthouse in your city to see what laws your state has on this if you live in the US.

Where I am, when last I checked, it was $500 with lawyer, and a little over $200 to do it yourself. If you do it yourself, you go to the city's law library to get the proper paperwork, type it up, and take it to the coreect office with the money. Later, you will see a judge who will ask you questions about why you want to change. If you are not doing it for bad reasons, which you are not, they should let you do it.
