The world's tiniest baby - meet the 10oz bundle of defiance
Last updated at 23:35pm on 27th September 2007

When she was born, 15 weeks premature and weighing ten and a half ounces, her father's confidence was about the only thing on Kimberly Mueller's side.

In the few snatched moments he was allowed before his daughter was whisked away by doctors, Andreas Mueller spoke from his heart.

"I whispered to her: 'Kimberly, you'll make it,'" he recalled.
With a survival chance of less than 1,000 to one, every day she has got through since then is a triumph.

Six months later, Kimberly has finally been allowed to go home to her parents in Hanover.

"Babies as small as this usually have no chance," said Dr Oliver Moeller, a heart specialist who treated her.

"We are incredibly lucky that she lived. Such a case I have never experienced. We had a lot of luck ... a lot."

Kimberly is the smallest baby ever born in Germany and the youngest to survive.

She was just 10.2 inches long and weighed little more than a packet of butter when she arrived in the 25th week of her mother's pregnancy.

Petra Mueller, 38, who remained at her daughter's bedside in intensive care at the University Clinic in Goettingen, was allowed only to stroke her with her finger.

"It was the nicest thing when she would grip my finger in her tiny hands," she recalled.

"She was like a little bear gripping a tree trunk, just hanging on for life as if she was saying 'Don't leave me, mummy'."

Kimberly was placed in an incubator for warmth, given a respirator to help her breathe and fed through a drip. She was also given a cocktail of drugs to boost an immune system that was barely formed.

At three months, she faced a major setback, when doctors feared she could be blind. But laser treatment corrected the problem.
Kimberly's progress was underlined when she arrived home this week weighing five and a half pounds and measuring 17 inches.

During the coming weeks she will continue to be fed artificially and will need to have oxygen as her lungs keep developing.

The world's smallest known surviving baby was Rumaisa Rahman who weighed just 8.6 ounces when she was born in Chicago in 2004.

Now, you pro abortionist, tell me that is not a baby.

My reply, although it will not be published:
David, it's not proabortionist, it's pro-choice. And no, it's not a baby. It's clearly not ready. If it's not capable to survive on it's own, it's not meant to live, it will most likely be crippled all it's life. Bravo doctors. I would have let it die. Survival of the fittest.

I am very pro-abortion and proud :smoke of it. The pro-lifers use that term to try to shut us up and feel "bad" about abortion.

Notice how a lot of men are the first to scream about the "pro-aborts"? I am certain most of the same guys scream when their wives, who have shat out too many babies, are tired of sex due to the consequences and the fact that the same men do not want contraception available to their spouses because of their ridiculous Christian church rules.

Medical care needs to go to those who are already alive and breathing and a part of society rather than spend millions to save one tiny bay-bee. Most women really would do society a favour by going to the nearest abortion clinic once they miss their periods.

OH MY FUCK!! That "fetus" looks like it should have been or was on its way to being aborted or miscarried!!!!!!!

That is not a fuckin' baby - holy hell, it looks like a half-dried raisin with arms. It would have been far better off letting Dr. Darwin take care of it - a creature born that prematurely is going to have some health problems (it already had known vision and respiratory issues).

Bet you won't see any pro-lifers jumping to help this thing - even though it's a fetus, once it's outside the uterus, it is no longer of their concern.

I would be shocked if that kid doesn't have long-term, severe health consequences. Even if the kid seems relatively okay now, some problems may not show up for a few years. And what then? As Cambion's already pointed out, the pro-lifers won't give a fuck so long as it's outta the uterus.

I would have let it die also. . .

All I feel bad about is that the "pro-lifers" were not aborted before their breeders shit them out.

As a physician, I must ask the tough question that no one else in this politically correct world will: After spending millions on trauma-level care for this child, do its doctors feel good about creating a shitty quality of life for it? You know the breeders, who are enjoying this orgasmic Munschausen's by proxy shining moment, are thinking only of themselves and not the future of that child. Yes there are circumstances under which some of these kids will thrive, but this is a very slim minority who will ever make it to adulthood without major medical problems and a horrible quality of life in constantly battling disease after disease.

My Gawd, that picture...that's not a baby; it's a hamster.

Stuff like this makes me sick...all this money spent on this kid to prolong her life so she can live in pain. In the old days, something like this would have mercifully died. But today? Those stupid Bible-humping fundies want all measures taken to "preserve Life," without a thought to what kind of life it is.

The fundies will take the sound bite, but do they really care about this kid? Hell no. When she's a retarded 25 year old (if her painful life even lasts that long), she won't be a cyooote widde baybee and she will be long forgotten.

So she got to go home. Big fucking deal. Did anyone catch that she can't eat or breathe on her own? The parents and the medical profession that did this to her are monsters.

Dr. Dan is right on with his reply. This shit has been a big sore spot for me as well.

Why not spend the money on people it can truly help?

Egads!
I'm sure pushing it out was easy, but...egads!

"Why not spend the money on people it can truly help?"
Don't you know? EVERYONE can pull themselves up by their bootstraps! Everyone! Just use a little elbow grease and gumption and you too can be just as rich as the Hilton family! It's ALL possible once you're out of the womb.
