The mother of Shannon Matthews was said to be distraught last night after it emerged that three of her other children are being looked after by social services.
Karen Matthews, 32, who has seven children by five different fathers, was believed to be staying in a "safe house" after the disclosure.
"She's absolutely devastated," a friend said yesterday.
"She lost Shannon for 24 days and now this. She's in pieces and I don't think she can cope with much more."
The dramatic development came as Miss Matthews's 22-year-old boyfriend, Craig Meehan, appeared in court accused of possessing 130 indecent images of children.
The supermarket fishmonger was yesterday remanded behind bars for "his own protection" at the end of an 11-minute court hearing, having declined to make a bail application.
Friends of Miss Matthews said they believed she had ended her relationship with Meehan. Detectives found the images after seizing two computers from the home Meehan shared with Shannon and her mother in Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire, on February 20, the court heard.

The pictures are not believed to be of Shannon or her siblings.
Meehan, who has a two-year-old daughter from his relationship with Miss Matthews, is charged with ten specimen counts relating to possession of child pornography and one all-encompassing charge.
Meehan's uncle, Michael Donovan, 39, has been charged with the kidnap and false imprisonment of Shannon, who vanished on February 19 following a school swimming trip.
The nine-year-old was rescued 24 days later on March 14 from the base of a divan bed in Donovan's dingy flat, less than a mile from her home.
Although an emergency protection order on Shannon has been lifted, she has still not been allowed home, with child protection authorities carefully monitoring her care following her ordeal.
She is thought to have been reunited with her mother during a three-hour meeting on Wednesday.
Meehan's arrest has, however, severely dented any hopes of Shannon returning home.
Close friends leapt to Miss Matthews's defence yesterday.
Petra Jamieson, a 30-year- old mother of four, said: "Karen has said she no longer wants to be a part of Craig's life.
"She hasn't told him face to face but I think he will assume anyway. We are all sticking by her and want people to know that they shouldn't take their anger out on Karen.
"She had absolutely no idea and no one should blame her."
Miss Matthews's neighbour, Peter Brown, 34, said: "The mood has changed big time over the last day or so. It's really taken a turn for the worse.
"I don't think we'll be seeing Craig round here for some time. As we understand it Karen is now in a safe house.
"The children have had nowhere else to go so they are being looked after elsewhere. It's really awful."
Miss Matthews was not at the Dewsbury Magistrates Court hearing, where Meehan spoke only to confirm his name, age and address.
Handcuffed to a security guard, he wore a Manchester United football shirt and looked pale and drawn as he sat down in the dock.
Meehan will reappear in court on April 11.
• Detectives are still questioning Shannon about what happened during the 24 days she was missing, it emerged yesterday.
Police have been interviewing the nine-year-old in 15-minute bursts because of her age and the sensitive nature of the questions.
The interviews are conducted in a special suite designed to look like a classroom in an attempt to coax details from her and detectives expect the process to continue for weeks.
Police rescued Shannon from a flat belonging to her stepfather Craig Meehan's uncle, Michael Donovan, in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, on March 14.
Computer programmer Donovan, 39, is due to stand trial in November on charges of kidnapping and false imprisonment.
