and again, virginity is really only by her word. It can't be proven as it's entirely possible for a female to bust her hymen during any number of non-sexual activities. Viriginity is worthless. My husband said he never had interest in virgins because of possibiity of causing pain and how the woman would more than likely not enjoy relations or not know what to do. I have known some Christian fundamentalist types who put a huge emphasis on virginity. One of these is a married couple I know. They were both virgins when they married in their early 30s (I personally can't imagine holding back from sex for that long!). They filed for divorce a few years later. They actually had nothing in common, other than both being virgins, and their belief in the all-importance of sexual purity. Which got them nowhere. Just led them into an unhappy marriage and divorce.

I once read some fundie site with a section on "the engaged" ones who were virgins and some of them told about how their honeymoon went since they had been virgin brides. The great majority said that they developed rashes, severe vaginal itching, infections, swelling, some had trouble walking and NONE enjoyed their 2 week honeymoons. The vaginal irritation that comes with having lots of sex repeatedly as a newly "deflowered" virgin and the activity that comes along with being "on vacation", since they ALL took 2 weeks or more for their honeymoon, caused nearly every one of them to experience discomfort at the very least. Since most of their husbands were virgins as well, they were inexperienced and fumbled and floundered around a lot which probably added to the problem.

Also, many of the women were disappointed with hubby's size (are ALL men this small? they frequently asked other wives) and nearly ALL of them were disappointed with the experience. If they choose to remain virgins till marriage, fine, their choice...but wouldn't it be better if part of the pre-marital counseling would be just some straightforward talk about how to have good first-time sex? They're probably both nervous and clueless, so the class could talk about foreplay, how to use lubrication (I think that would help a lot), honoring the woman's request to abstain for a day or two if she's sore, whatever. I'd say birth control but I don't think that's part of their plan...but just a bit of sex ed I think would make the whole experience smoother for both.

I don't think its so much insecurity about their small size. I think its insecurity that they don't really know how to perform that well in bed. I encountered quite a number of men, back when I was dating, who could not perform AT ALL. I dated about 5 or 6 men who were impotent. They couldn't get it up to save their life. Also, its important to note I dated for about 20 years before getting married.
