Look what's making a comeback... (forced contraception proposal in the Netherlands)

Posted by kman
Frankly, many people these days would not see a problem with targeting the group upon whom the Rotterdam authorities propose to impose this requirement, but no one wants to say this publicly. Behind closed doors they would admit that some simply have no business having children, or having any more children, because of blatant irresponsibility or inability to care for themselves, let alone dependents. The proposal covers types of contraception, not complete sterilization, it appears.

The biggest flaw, as some comments note, is that no one proposes targeting irresponsible fathers for compulsory sterilization. That needs to be done too.

Sterilization programs in the US and other countries went off the rails by unfairly targeting some based on ethnicity, background, or minor handicaps. If these programs had stuck to those who had already behaved as the targets of this proposal have, then they would probably still exist today.

Let the flame wars begin.

Rotterdam calls for 'incompetent mothers' to take compulsory contraception
'Not being born is a form of child protection too,' says alderman responsible for youth welfare

Rotterdam city council has called for mothers, judged to be incapable to raise children, to be given compulsory contraception by court order.

The Dutch council has launched a voluntary contraception drive for 160 women believed to be at risk due to learning difficulties, psychological issues or addiction, nrc.nl reports.

The alderman responsible for youth welfare, Hugo De Jonge, has called for judges to be given the power to force "incompetent mothers" to use contraception such as getting the coil fitted.

Mr De Jonge said: "It concerns children who are born into families where it turns everybody’s stomach to think that they’re having a child. Our primary concern used to be the interests of the parents, but now we pay more attention to the interests of the child. Not being born is a form of child protection too."

The alderman said the council have earmarked 400 women in the South Holland city for the programme. He stated there would only be a need for 10 to 20 compulsory contraception orders each day.

There have been stiff resisitance from a number of parties to compulsory contraception orders including the governing VVD and Mr De Jonge's Christian Democrats.

VVD MP Arno Rutte told NOS: "The government can not decide who may or may not have children. The door should not be a little ajar for this type of legislation."

What's the sanction if they get pregnant anyway or have the contraceptive device removed?

Where's the reciprocity for men? And I don't care to hear to them howl about how there's nothing available - there is: condoms, which are remarkably reliable, and vasectomies.

Are there going to be reciprocal actions about and possibly later investigations into incompetent men who father children? Any interest at all...? No...? Thanks, all I needed to know to know this isn't actually (just) about preventing children, which I'm all for, but really to control women even more.

Besides, incompentent women can and do have children with competent men, and incompetent men can and do have children with competent women. The competent party - yes, even if male, *gasp* - can raise the damned brood.

Child welfare is a smoke screen here, make no mistake, especially in the current sociopolitical atmosphere.
I have issues with society forcing contraception on members. It isn't their place to determine who is eligible to receive contraception based on arbitrary characteristics such as "irresponsibility". It is a slippery slope and would be way too easy for the same society to also decide they can determine who is not eligible to receive any contraception and force "responsible" people to breed against their wills.

Even in the instance of child molesters I don't advocate for mandatory sterilization upon conviction. Molesters are very resourceful at finding vulnerable spouses and manipulating significant others with children so mandatory sterilization isn't going to be the solution that some may expect.

Guidelines can be established for those who receive benefits funded by the taxes of society and offer the option to forego benefits and thus be free from adhering to any guidelines. Guidelines such as: if a parent has more than 2 kids or commits a felony then benefits will be eliminated. As long as their funded benefits also cover sterilization and/or birth control.
It is a very charged social-political issue, and there's no denying there are human rights that can/are being abused.

I'm not offering support for this in any way, but we all know there are those people (of both sexes) that should not breed period.

This came up quite regularly with my old like of work with severely intellectually disabled adults, who did not have the mental capacity to be a parent. Their bodies were adults and were capable of carrying a loaf full term, but they had the mental age of a 3 year old. Furthermore, they had such severe behaviours that they actually posed a risk of harm to the infant. On top of that they had genetic defects that would be passed on, and they were more likely to be inpigged by another tard, as they resided in close proximity to them.

Abortion was rarely an option when they were inpigged, as there was significant legal and ethical barriers trying to get a forced abortion done on a tard - so more likely than not, they had to carry to full term, and the loaf was usually placed for adoption as soon as it was cooked (or half-cooked as many a case). One can imagine the challenges of dealing with a post-natal tard with the mind of a 3 year old, having their kid whipped away.

Court ordered IUD and contraceptive implants were offered, and had the added benefit of stopping menstruation (which is another very complex issue with them). These court ordered methods were not simply slapped on, but required extensive reviews of each person.
