Guarantee Equality for Mothers
With maternal profiling becoming so commonplace the NY Times covered it (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/23/weekinreview/23buzzwords.html?_r=1), mother-centric laws need to be a top priority for women’s rights!
1) Equal Pay: "Non-mothers earn 10 percent less than their male counterparts; mothers earn 27 percent less; and single mothers earn between 34 percent and 44 percent less. The wage gap is a direct reflection of bias against working mothers." (Source: http://www.momsrising.org/wages).
2) Healthcare: C-sections are the number 1 major surgery in America with almost 40% of women receiving a c-section birth, and yet, there is no protection for women who are either violated by having surgery they refused or for women who later face discrimination because of the surgery. Today, over 300 hospitals ban women from having a baby naturally after having a c-section and some insurace companies are discriminating against women who have prior c-sections. (Source: http://www.ican-online.org/).
3) Childcare: "Child care in the United States costs between $4,000 and $10,000 a year PER CHILD... [AND] a full one-quarter of families with children under age six earned less than $25,000 in 2001." (Source: http://www.momsrising.org/childcare).
4) Discrimination: Mothers have the hardest time succeeding at their jobs with the constant discrimination against pregnancy, motherhood, and breastfeeding. 51% of new mothers lack ANY paid leave so some take unpaid leave, some quit, some lose their jobs. The same goes for mothers who try to breastfeed or breast-pump while working. (Source: http://www.momsrising.org/maternity).
Please make equality for moms an idea to share with President-Elect Obama!
Jeezus Kee-rist! The man isn't even in office yet and these bitches are already mooing and lowing!
