Horrible treatment of kittens

Why on earth would anyone do this to a kitten? Animals are not supposed to have piercings,I bet it was painful for those kittens.

I have never liked the ear tags used with livestock. I can't help but think that hurts like the dickens when they punch them through the ear, and that surely there is a better way to identify animals (nontoxic paint used to put numbers on their hides, numbered collars, &c.).

With a tiny animal like a kitten, I imagine the pain of piercings is proportionately greater due to their small size. The kitten in the pic didn't look too thrilled. It could get the jewelry caught on something and rip their ear--euwww. Idiotic idea.
