Link between not vaccinating and SIDS

I wonder if all those proud anti-vaxxers know that not vaccinating their little darlings could increase the kids' chances of dying of SIDS. From one source:

"For example, another study by Walker and others focused on healthy babies with birth weights greater than 5.5 pounds. For these children, unvaccinated children were 6.5 times more likely to die of SIDS than were vaccinated children"

And the link:

There's also a couple sources that claim vaccines cause SIDS, but a lot, lot more that say unvaxed babies are at greater risk for cot death than those who get the DPT vaccine and whatever other vaccines babies usually get. I guess the link is due to the fact that cot death is often caused by immune system problems, breathing problems or otherwise sickness. When babies get vaxed against shit that can kill them, their immune systems get a little stronger and they have a better chance of fighting off other illnesses that can make them die in their sleep.

Sorry anti-vax Moos, but herd immunity won't sto your kid from dying of SIDS.

something will always kill them..

CERTIFIED HOSEHEAD!!!

people (especially women) do not give ONE DAMN about what they inflict on children and I defy anyone to prove me wrong

Dysfunctional relationships almost always have a child. The more dysfunctional, the more children.

The selfish wants of adults outweigh the needs of the child.

Some mistakes cannot be fixed, but some mistakes can be 'fixed'.

People who say they sleep like a baby usually don't have one. Leo J. Burke

Adoption agencies have strict criteria (usually). Breeders, whose combined IQ's would barely hit triple digits, have none.

They are also allowing their kyds to die of preventable diseases with this "no vax" nonsense too. I just saw this article yesterday on CNN.shrug This bullshit of "Vax causes Autism" doesn't hold water AT ALL, judging by the HUGE number of Autism spectrum cases currently being reported among "No Vax" kyds. As for the "herd" mentality mentioned when they go on a VAX rampage, apparently it works the other way when they get aboard the "NO VAX!!!!" train. I think that children who have not been vaccinated against communicable diseases should NOT be allowed in public until they are past the age considered at risk. They are placing the lives of adults who may have been older and not vaccinated when the vaccine first came out at risk, (who are now elderly) and are especially placing people, INCLUDING OTHER BRATS, at risk who have compromised immune systems. If they think it's "natural" to walk around with Leprosy, are we to allow that as well so as not to infringe on their fucking parental rights?ranting Personally, I don't see the difference and some of these diseases are more deadly and faster killers than Leprosy too.shrug

Article:
"...A childhood illness that has mostly been curbed through vaccinations has killed one child and sickened four others in Minnesota, health officials said Friday. Authorities recommend that those younger than 2 years be vaccinated against 14 diseases, including Hib.
The five children were infected with a bacterial infection known as Hib: Haemophilus influenzae type b.
Three of the affected children had not received any vaccinations, including the 7-month-old who died, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "The situation is of concern," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Disease at the CDC. "It could be happening elsewhere, and of course it's tragic that one of the children actually died from a preventable disease."

Hib primarily affects infants and children under 5 years of age. The vaccine prevents pneumonia, epiglottis (severe throat infection) and meningitis, which is an infection of the covering of the brain and spinal cord, caused by the bacteria. One in 20 children infected with Hib dies, according to the CDC. And survivors of the disease can become deaf; 10 to 30 percent have permanent brain damage. "Parents may not realize the importance of this vaccine," Schuchat said. "The disease is still around." People tend to "think it's gone because it has not been seen for a while. Clearly, the bacteria is in the community in Minnesota, and babies that haven't gotten their vaccines are at risk," she said.

Before vaccines became widely used, about 20,000 Hib cases were reported each year in the country. After children began receiving the vaccinations in the early 1990s, CDC officials said, there was a 99 percent drop in cases.
A shortage of the Hib vaccine is also causing concern, officials said.
One of the two companies that produce the vaccine, Merck Inc., recalled more than a million doses in December 2007 because of contamination. The recall left a unit of Sanofi Aventis as the only vaccine supplier, creating a shortage.
Under normal circumstances, the first series of the Hib vaccine is administered to children when they are 2, 4 and 6 months old. A booster shot is administered between a child's 12th and 15th month.

Because of the vaccine shortage, the CDC recommended that the primary series for infants should get priority and that older children, who have stronger immune systems, should defer the booster shot until the supply situation improved. Officials said the supply should be back to normal by this summer. The vaccine shortage did not cause the infection of the five Minnesota children, federal and state health officials said. Three of the children had not received any vaccination because of their parents' decisions, not because of a vaccine shortage, officials said.

One of the infected children, a 5-month old, had not completed the three-dose series of the vaccination, and a 15-month old child had received all doses but had an immune deficiency.

The cases are not related and were in different counties, said Dr. Ruth Lynfield, Minnesota state epidemiologist.

But the shortage may be having an effect in the community.

"When there are high immunization rates, there is herd immunity," Lynfield said. "It may be that because of the shortage, that herd immunity has dropped. That first manifests in unimmunized children."

Some parents don't vaccinate their children because of claims that childhood vaccinations cause autism. Health agencies say there is no evidence linking vaccines to autism.

"For parents that are wavering about whether they need the vaccine, they need to know it's an important vaccine to protect their child from serious infection," Schuchat said.

The Minnesota cases have alarmed health officials because "this is the highest number of cases that we have had since 1992, when vaccines became widely used," Lynfield said.

In 1987, the national rate of Hib meningitis was 41 cases per 100,000 children under the age of 5. After the Hib vaccine was introduced, the rate had fallen to 0.11 per 100,000 in 2007, according to the CDC. "

i wasnt vaccinated. i was going to get the 3 individual shots, and i made me seriously ill.

its not so much the shots in themselves are bad, its the fact that 3 shots at the same time can put extra strain on a newly formed form.

thats what the problem is. trying to do too much at once. and blowing the circuits.

so i never had any vaccinations apart from the first. and i grew up ok.

then you get the weaker herd members dying out, making the next gen stronger. so natural selection.

When I was a sprog, it seemed I got really sick after some early vaccines--had the measels at 14 months, would run a fever after booster shots, etc. That said, the vaccines probably didn't cause the sickness afterward, probably just bad luck.

As for the awwtism argument, I think bad genetics is the usual cause, not vaccines. It does tend to run in famblees, unfortunately. Try telling that to wannabe parunts, though.sad smiley

for me it was everytime i got a vaccine, i became ill.. now that put my body under stress, and thats just one.. now imagine that times 3 or 5 or 7. i can see how some vaccinations can affect someone who's body and system isnt strong to begin with.
