Name Game
July 02, 2006
I know it can go too far with unusual names, but I would not want the government telling me what names I cannot have, and how to spell the ones I can. That is too much interference. What if I don't want a freaking mexican name at all? If I want to be Karen Elisabeth Beltran, I should be, and not have to be Karen MARIA Beltran.

I hear you, Techinicolou Guest. I may not like hearing names like "Lawanicka" or "Shaunutria" (yes...I have heard those exact names) but I don't feel it is government's business to get involved in the Name Game. What is next? Governing how parents dress their children. The public schools demanding uniforms in some districts shows this sort of "socialism".

I'm so glad someone understands, India. I'd rather have a few odd names around, than to have only names approved by the government.

As for clothing, well and names, I do not like it when individuality is quashed, unless that individuality poses a danger, as in gang signs, clothing, colours. Damn this hiphop nation.
Re: Name Game

but its no longer individuality, when everyone calls they kids those names..

Technicolour Guest, my friend with a good kid has had to deal with the asinine uniform policies at her son's last school. The rule was no tees -- even the white ones -- under polo shirts. Polo shirts made with the traditional waffle-weave does not allow the skin to breathe. The boy caught h*ll at school by a petty prinicpal. My friend decided to have her son go to a different school since she pretty much lives on the school zoning border. No uniforms at this school. I mentioned to my friend that costs for clothes will actually be cheaper because school uniforms are overpriced and made with cheap fabrics that are not good for the skin.

I'm also one who likes seeing the occasional uncommon name (and by that I do not mean ones with kre8ive spellings). The government has no place telling people anywhere what they can or cannot name their children. It's as if they want all children to have the same name to prevent individuality or deviation.

I'm also extremely anti-uniform, especially after spending nine years at a Catholic school being forced to wear them. We had to wear these heavy knitted sweater vests and have our shirts buttoned all the way up, and we were only allowed to take off the sweaters and unbutton our ties and collars when people started showing signs of heat stroke. For the longest time at my old school, girls couldn't wear jewelry, make-up, or nail polish, and couldn't dye their hair - no one could be individual. The principal would probably shit herself if she saw how I dress now.

I love crazy names - complete with kre8ive spellings. They provide great laughs. So I'm definitely against government name-policing. I'm also very much against uniforms because it'll just be another thing the rest of us will have to hear moos endlessly whining about:

"Little Awztyn outgrows his uniforms so fast! And they're so expensive! It's so haaaaaaard!"

"Little Quartneigh & I used to have gal-dates and get to skip through the mall holding hands when we went to buy her mini-slutwear for school each year, now we don't get to spend any time together! It's so haaaard!"

"Little Aztryd is an Indigo/Crystal/Rainbow child and her pwecious kre8ivity is being squashed by the school not allowing her to wear her peanut butter & grape juice-stained tutu 17 days in a row. It's so haaaaard!"

I'm all for self expression. Lord knows I have an opinion about everything! After teaching in a socioeconomically unbalanced school system for 15 years, I have actually wondered if school uniforms would help with some of the arguing and strife among the haves and the havenots. I can't tell you how many times I have had to reprimand some little rich snot for making a child from a low income family cry because his or her clothing wasn't the latest designer fashions. Kids can be really cruel little bastards. Simple, inexpensive, uniforms and shoes might even out the playing field a little bit. Heck, dress clothing is so expensive I used to wish that teachers had uniforms to wear! After the school day is done everyone can put on whaever they want to express themselves. It's not like most teachers can actually be their real selves at work anyway, and the way kids are now days I wish they didn't feel the need to express themselves at school in anyway that isn't academic.

Sherz, I had a friend who sent her grandson (who she had custody of) to Catholic school. Despite being made to wear the same ugly costume, this child was made fun of for not having the "right" aka designer shoes or socks. This even extended to backpacks and purses for the female students. Even in uniform, children will still do what they can to stand out. You know more about hassles having been in the school system so I can see your point of view. Yeah, many kids are cruel b*st*rds!

Nothing would be problem proof, India. You're right, they would find other things to pick on each other about.
Ewww Catholic school. All of my friends who went there say it really f****d them up.
Re: Name Game
July 04, 2006
i went to an all boys catholic school, and yes i am screwed up, for many years i was terrifed of women, as i didnt have much contact, as the boys school wasnt just all boys.. it was run by the dela salle brothers. the girls school was run by nuns.. for many years i wasnt interested in women, now i met faust.. i wore school uniform all the time there. we were in 4 houses like harry potter, st george my house, st david, st andrew, st patrick. there wasnt all this idea of wearing posh, i think thats a predominantly female idea.. boys were different, more sort of brutality rather than the picking on outfits.. and there were always ways to accessorise, put badges on, put the thick tie end in your shirt leaving a smaller one.. and so on..

As long as the uniforms are well made and reasonably prevent preventable injuries (well, the military tells us they are preventable) such as heat exhaustion, I can see something with uniforms.

Restrict bookbags to an officially made one in the school colors, boys wearing black Corfram [tm] low quarters, girls wearing black Corfram [tm] flats, or perhaps pumps with heels no higher than 1" or so. I look at my long hair and realize that hair would have to be tied with an elastic in one of the school colors, or black or white. Headgear would not be worn inside, except for those allowed for religious purposes (yarmulke, burqua, Sikh turban, etc., and those would have to be black or white.) One could even restrict eyeglasses frames to one of a few different types to prevent issues with designer frames. Disallow jewelry, except those for religious or medical purposes.

I could go on and on, but one realizes such a dress code would have to go all the way or it might be considered a useless exercise.

Yick, gleepy, that sounds awful. I'm so glad I am out of school.

I like being Technicolour Guest, not Boring Same As Everyone Else Guest winking smiley

The only type of clothing I woulkd disallow is anything gang in nature.
Re: Name Game
July 05, 2006
but anything can be gang, in harry potter, the schools, hufflepuff could be termed a gang, its not what things are, its what they represent, are hasidic (sic) jews a gang, they all wear the same, you see groups of them hanging around..

some of mt best friends and family are jewish so.. but anything can be termed a gang, by what anyone wears, sports fans, etc etc.. reminds me of the monty python sketch hells grannies..

Gleepy...yes, that does sound awful with the State dictating the exact colors of bookbags, brand of shoes & socks, and down to what coloring religious headgear would be! Many religions do forbid the use of black or white except for certain purposes. I am with Technicolour Guest and do not want to be forced to look like everyone else. I wear a uniform for work because I am back in my old field -- security -- but that is of my choice. Outside of work, I look very different.

Funny how the article stated that no other country has laws regulating first names. NOT TRUE! How many times have there been posts here about Germany? They have had a similar law there for years. The reporter obviously didn't do their homework.

Gang in this context means juvenile thugs sporting the gang's colour, and requisite baggy clothes with jeans under thier asses. They are usually known for terrorising neighbourhoods with their shenanigans. They may or may not be packing heat.

India Darshan, doesn't gleepy's dress code sound very Orwellian to you?
Re: Name Game
July 06, 2006
call it a culture difference, we have gangs sort of here, but they are any type, usually they have a hair cut linked to the gang, skinheads etc.. but no weapons, i was saying anything could be looked upon as a gang, regardless of content, check out clockwork orange, and you will see different types of outfits then that changing year later, it means nothing.

yes scorpio, and theres a few laws in the Uk, i remember one name julius ceaser 10, its a family name, and the people in charge checked to see if it was acceptable, because of the details held.. it was.. even in california there are rules California courts have decided that a number is not sufficient. For example "151" would not be permitted, but "One Hundred-Fifty-One" would be.

In Norway If you have not given your child a name with 90 days, the King (in effect the ministry of justice) will do so for you. Names may also be rejected, whereupon you will have to come up with a new name or have one imposed

in Quebec not only is it illegal to not have a name, but a committee exists to check the names that are given to children. This committee has the power to refuse to allow you to name the child as you chose if it deems that name inappropriate

also the french as well have certain rules, and japan, but they have recently extended the rules for names

sounds like most countries have rules like that.. apart from america

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/07/27/wjapan27.xml

there are similar rules for deed poll

http://rainbowwarrior.coa.edu/laura/laws/national.htm

The following nations have or are considering legislation to control naming practices, iceland, france, honduras, turkey, germany, mexico as well as more now..

http://rainbowwarrior.coa.edu/laura/listings/allamerican.htm

just imagine they were in Schleswig This meant that if a person's father was named Jep or Peter, then the sons and daughters used the surname Jepsen or Petersen. Areas closest to Denmark the daughters sometimes used the surnames as Jepsdatter and Petersdatter

Yes, Technicolour Guest, Gleepy's dress code is very Orwellian! One call center I worked "upped" it's dress code from sort-of business casual to very business casual. The jackass manager who ran the place actually had the nerve to state how "loud" colors or "ethnic" patterns were not allowed on our clothing. An agent could be sent home for wearing a brighter pink skirt of a pair of trousers that had a pattern. Very Orwellian!
Re: Name Game

i can see how some offices work better with uniforms, a unifying work together, but i can also see that there should be leeway as well..

unlike men, women have many more options at work for clothes, skirts, trousers, blouses, jackets, men on the other hand have trousers, shirts, and a tie and jackets usually.. and any man knows ties can be a big pain to wear all day long

Some of the girls I knew from my hometown who were the biggest sluts around, went to the local semi-private Catholic high school.

Some of the biggest druggies were the sons and daughters of the local doctors/lawyers - they also went to this high school.

Nothing like a good old Catholic education.

Uniforms in Catholic school never unified the kids nor stopped inappropriate sexual behaviour. Most teen Catholic school girls will do whatever they can to look "hot" in that god-awful uniform of an ugly plaid skirt, dippy white blouse, cardigan for cold days, and the knee socks. I grew up Catholic but escaped the Church's educational system, thanks to my wonderful & liberal mom. I would see girls in the neighbourhood in their "uni's" rolling up their skirts to make minis and unbottoning their blouses very low hoping the nuns would not catch on. In a work setting, people do the other things to try to remain an individual if they must wear a uniform. It comes out with jewelry, cosmetics, or possibly tattoos if that is allowed on the job.
