Where y'all goin'/been for vacation?

Going to Rehoboth for the 2nd week of September- fairly family free unless you count the turds with wee ones, but the gay community and the fact thqat school is back in minimizes the pointless screaming modern children do thse days when they play (esp. on the beach) - should be fun.

How about you?

Going to nashville in 2 weeks for the weekend, Just to check it out, (any ideas on what to see there?)

Going white water rafting in Tenn in a month

Yepper- going to GA (family) for thanksgiving - plane down, driving 10 hours back up to check out coastal towns to move to in 2010 or 09. Couldn't do THAT with a brat whining away in the back seat.

RR what coastal towns will you be checking out?

Hon, just dug out all the maps last night and taped them together on a wall to simulate the coast (i'm missing NC). I have the tourism guides so I can avoid the "McVillages" but I will be staying close to I95 with meanderings off to see what's what. any suggestions?

I'm definitely flying down to Texas for my master's graduation in December.

I may visit a friend in Ocean City, MD in September. I'd also like to save money for a trip to California,Ireland, Poland, the UK or Italy, but that depends on my money and living situation.

@Rose Red: Rehoboth Beach is pretty cool. It's good for a peaceful vacation and very laid back. I noticed some beautiful bed and breakfasts when I was there.

Well, this weekend I an heading to St. Louis to root on my beloved Illini football team...should be great fun..tailgating, bar hopping, casinos and hopefully a good game. Got to go shake out my orange wig! LOL

Then, for the BIG NEWS, my best friend and I just booked a 2 week trip to Egypt for November 5th! More details on that later!

wow! Egypt! when you get back from that you HAVE to hook us up with some pix. What made you pick Egypt? Is it safe?

Yeah, it's safe, we made sure to check that out..we booked it with Gate 1 travel, so we'll kind of be with a group, also. We picked it simply because it is such a weird and wild thing place to go, not to mention we're looking forward to the educational and historic aspect.

and...it's on our "list of things to do before we die". "Ride a camel in Egypt" was something we wrote down on a list when we we're 18. And now were 40..we figured, what the hell are we waiting for, we're not gonna enjoy an adventure like that as much when we're 65, if we even live that long!

I will be going to Crete next week. It's a hotel exclusively for solo travelers. No brats allowed! Can't wait!

DW and I just got back from a really nice Pagan gathering in Colorado. We got handfasted and had a BLAST!

Rode our bikes to the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, and Colorado.

I did a bit of globe trotting in my past and enjoyed it once I reached my destination, but I do NOT travel well. I just about always get seasick, airsick, carsick, etc......I have tried the patch behind the ears, dramamine in liquid and pill forms, and even a narcotic suppository, but it takes me at least a day or two coming and going to get over it. I get constipated, nauseated, dizzy, etc...no matter which mode of transportation that I take, where I sit, or what I eat or don't eat. If I don't have two full weeks with a couple of days at each end to recuperate, it's not worth the travel sickness to get there. SO, my current favorite vacation is to lie to my relatives that we are leaving town and then just stay home. That way we don't get inundated with the usual phone calls and pesky "come to granny's on wednesday" invitations or the "we missed you" remarks when we don't show up to one of their every other day family get togethers with 20 0r 30 kyds running about.

My husband has SO much extended family on this mountain that they could fill a small community center and are always having a birthday, baby shower, wedding, weekly dinner, bbq, etc....Someone in our extended family is ALWAYS getting married, having a baby, or dying, so we feel obligated to attend most every function, especially the funerals. These things are'nt "normal", they are Kentucky mountain clannish style in that they last ALL fucking day. To not show up appears to be offensive to them, so we regularly attend quite a few "events." We are basically two loner peas in a pod and just sitting quietly at home doing whatever we want without their calling incessantly is a vacation to us. Even though they all have cells and the minutes all cost the same, they are "old school" about calling "long distance". We have his trusted sister who "pretends" she comes over to feed our cats, but other than that they all think we are at LEAST a state away.

We giggle as we take alternate routes off the mountain when we have to venture out into town, so we don't have to pass by any of their houses, but we try to stock up on all that we need so that we don't have to leave the house and risk getting "caught". We do this about 3 times a year and I enjoy it immensely. I suppose I am a cheap date.

That's pretty darn funny...what a pain in the ass it must be to have "family".

I cannot rave enough about the Mistral in Crete. It is the perfect holiday for mature, independent travelers who are looking to get away from it all. Basically the hotel is a family run establishment that caters to solo travelers. There are only about 30-40 guests at the hotel at most so you don't feel overwhelmed by the crowds and you have a chance to meet people. You can do as much or as little as you want. Lie by the pool, go to some of the towns, or take an excursion, it's really all up to you. The food is excellent (and included in the board), crete is gorgeous, and the staff is really friendly. And, best of all, no famblees allowed.
