Trust me, most of the people writing those ads are not the target audience. Lots of homos and single CFers. You do what you have to to push a product. And they do it well. When I was 21 I was given an account, stock car racing. Mind you, I knew nothing about the sport, but no one else wnated to do it. So I researched it and we tested some of the ads, and they did quite well. Here's a secret about advertising--the people writing some of the ads are laughing about the crap their clients actually bought.
Find a creative person in the ad biz and ask him or her, how well do you understand your target audience? Most of them will snort. That's the skill! You don't. You observe and watch. OnStar gets kudos in my book because they tapped into exactly what the breeders are afraid of--parenting! (Oh my gosh--I locked the keys in the car! That never happens! I'm a bad Mom! Help me! Help Me!).
