No charges likely in toddler's death

District Attorney Stan Rebert said Tuesday he doesn't believe charges will be forthcoming against the parents of a 15-month-old Red Lion girl who died Sunday after she was left in the family van for several hours.
Cassandra Starr was left in the van after her family came home from church about 1 p.m. Sunday, said York County Coroner Barry Bloss. The windows were up.

Cassandra's father, Christopher, an assistant pastor at a Chanceford Township church, was supposed to take Cassandra out of the van but forgot, Bloss said. She was found unconscious about three hours later by her mother, Jenny, who called 911.

Cassandra was pronounced dead at 5:27 p.m. at York Hospital. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

Bloss said he suspects she died of heat stroke.

District Attorney Stan Rebert said Tuesday morning he doesn't believe any charges will be forthcoming based on the preliminary information his office has received about the death.

"I think it's pushing the envelope to think this is criminal conduct at this point," Rebert said, adding the incident seems like "a terrible tragedy."
"It was a terrible accident," he said. "We are in deep grief over the loss."

....Twenty-six children have died in the United States this year from heat stroke after being left in vehicles, according to research conducted by Jan Null, an adjunct professor of meteorology at San Francisco State University.

Left her: Bloss said Christopher Starr removed items from the van but didn't remember to take out Cassandra, who was sleeping in an infant safety seat. Christopher Starr was later picked up to go back to church after the family got home.

Jenny Starr thought Cassandra was sleeping until the oldest of the couple's children -- ages 4, 5 and 7 -- told her Cassandra was not in her crib, Bloss said. She immediately went to the van, which was parked outside the home, and found Cassandra.

Christopher Starr has served as an assistant pastor at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Brogue since June 1999, according to the church Web site. He currently serves as youth pastor and summer camp director and leads a weekly bible club at Red Lion Area High School, among other duties.

Jenny Starr is also active in the church, according to its Web site. She sings and plays the viola in the church's music ministry, and helps as a part-time office secretary......"

AGAIN, how did he "forget" the kid? When the eldest kid told moomie the kid wasn't in her crib, why did she IMMEDIATELY go look in the van? It would be more logical to look around the house first as 15 month old kids can pull up, crawl, walk etc......Did her husband TELL her he put the kid in the crib? I think not since he "forgot" the kid was still in the car. So, why would moomie even THINK the kid was in the car? Of course they have to play up their Christian church involvement in order to remove all suspician that they could possibly be guilty. How could she go for THREE HOURS without noticing said kid was missing, and would she have even bothered to look for her if the oldest kid hadn't brought it up?

I think moomie and duddy planned the whole thing. So, TWENTY SIX kids, in America alone, have been murdered this year by stroking out or suffocating in locked vehicles and the parents are getting off scott free because they are such "good people". BULL SHIT.

The parents always get off scott free. Always.

However, if a paid caregiver/nanny had made the same mistake, she'd be in prison for it. I guarantee it.

Funny thing is, you almost NEVER hear about paid caregivers making this same "mistake" of leaving a kid locked in a car......kinda makes you wonder.

You got THAT right, cassyrod! Why are breeders ALWAYS let off scott-free?! Child neglect and endangerment remains that whether it is a parent or a caregiver who perpetrates it. Tragedy, my ASS! Postnatal abortion is more like it!

Sounds like God should have just went with a gift card.

See? Picking gifts out for other people just NEVER works. They always want to return it.

AHA HAHA!! Marvellous. And this dad has no doubt imposed his views on other people's troubles with words like "It's God's will." "Maybe you're not really living life the way God wants you to."

Yes, and parents commit child abuse in far greater numbers than caregivers do. That's a fact.
