What an awful thing to happen. The mother should have been more careful, but at least she's taking responsibility and both she and the kid feel terrible, and it sounds like the kitten was a much-loved family pet rather than a disposable toy. I was expecting one of those "Snotford keeps murdering puppies and people get mad at him, but he's just a chyyyyyyuld!"
