A gang of children killed a father-of-two by stoning him as he played a makeshift game of cricket with his son, a court has heard.

They surrounded a tennis court where Ernest Norton and his teenage son had set up a wicket and hurled bricks and debris in a "completely unprovoked attack".

Mr Norton, 67, collapsed in a pool of blood after being hit by a piece of rock and died from heart failure, the Old Bailey was told.

The gang, some as young as ten, then ran away and allegedly a witness heard one say, "Did you get him?" and others replying: "Yeah I think so."

Five boys, all aged 13 or under at the time of the onslaught last year, are accused of unlawfully killing Mr Norton, a retired engineering draughtsman. None can be named for legal reasons.

The court heard that the boys, all from Kent, were members of a gang called TNE - The New Estate - who had planned to take part in a "gang fight" earlier the same day.

Parents could be jailed for failing to tell truth about children conceived from donors

Parents who conceal the fact that a child was conceived from donor sperm or eggs could face jail under rules proposed today.

The information should be declared on birth certificates to ensure children learn the truth about their creation, says a powerful committee of MPs and peers.

In a report which touches on a highly-sensitive ethical issue, they argue that it would give parents "the incentive to inform their child" at the time and in the manner of their own choosing.

But because it is an offence to give false information on a birth certificate, anyone who refused could be fined or jailed for up to two years.

Fertility pressure groups described the proposals as a "blunt instrument" that could do more harm than good.

They say there is a serious danger children could discover by accident that they are not genetically related to their parents by stumbling across the birth certificate.

Abortion for all. IVF at 60. Now 'spare part' babies. What a dangerous path we are treading...
Another day, another terrible ethical dilemma. In response to the draft Human Tissue and Embryo Bill published in May, a committee of MPs and peers want us to give the nod to a vast increase in what are known as "saviour siblings" - more - shockingly termed "spare-part babies" - born to meet the specific needs of elder, ill siblings by providing a tissue match that could cure them.

They also want us to accept the creation of hybrid embryos, created by fertilising an animal egg with human sperm, a concept that makes me feel deeply uneasy.

Those of us who see the ethical slopes of reproductive medicine becoming ever more dangerously slippery can expect to be accused of heartlessness. Are these developments not designed to cure diseases suffered by young children?

Lord, what fools these mortals be!
- A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Act III, Scene ii

Voltaire said: "Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities."

H.L.Mencken wrote:"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. Albert Einstein
