Mother in court for dumping two babies in four years 'because of shame of being single mum'

Bronagh Bond: Dumped two babies because she was ashamed of falling pregnant out of wedlock
A woman dumped her two babies because she could not bear the family 'shame' of having them out of wedlock, a court heard.

Bronagh Bond dumped babies Angel and Holly on separate occasions because she couldn't face bringing them up and didn't want terminations.

Angel and Holly were the subject of major public appeals for their mother when they were discovered in Liverpool in 2003 and 2006 respectively.

Bond, 27, of Walton ignored both campaigns but later came forward when police discovered a close match between the DNA of her brother and the babies.

She admitted two charges of child cruelty at Liverpool Crown Court yesterday.

The court heard five-day-old Holly was found dumped near a block of flats in Walton at 7am on Christmas Eve 2003.

Then four-week-old Angel was discovered at 7.30am on July 29, 2006 on a path in Stanley Park with a dummy, bottle and a handwritten note which apologised for abandoning her.

Abandoned: Holly was dumped on Christmas Eve after her mother's relationship with her father deteriotated

Prosecutor Michael Jones said police took DNA samples which established they were sisters, but they were unable to find a match for their mother on the database.

However, Mr Jones said the close match with Bond's brother was discovered in April 2007.

Mr Jones said Ms Bond had panicked when she had found out she was pregnant with Holly.

He said: "She felt ashamed. She already had one child out of wedlock and was a single mother.

"She felt that because she was from a close-knit family, she could not bring shame on them and she did not want a termination."

The court heard Holly was the daughter of Ms Bond's former partner, while Angel was the product of a holiday romance in Turkey.

Charlotte Kenny, defending, said Bond had left the children in an area where she believed they would be swiftly found.

She said her client had a history of "late discovery pregnancies".

Ms Kenny said she discovered she was carrying Holly as the relationship with the father was breaking down.

She blanked it out and felt no emotional attachment when the child was born.

She said when Bond found out she was pregnant with Angel, she dreaded telling her family.

Ms Kenny said: "She found the prospect of their reaction too much to bear. She felt deep, deep embarrassment and profound shame."

Judge Henry Globe QC, told Bond: "This is a sad case. That is apparent from the facts. You are essentially a good person.

"You do not have any previous convictions and I believe you have the capability to look after people well. It is fortunate that neither child has been physically adversely affected. How they might be mentally, only time will tell."

Bond was given a two-year community order, which comes attached with a two-year supervision order.

After the case, Detective Sergeant Eddie Cowan, said: "Police and social services have been supporting members of the children's extended family, who were devastated when they found out.

"The family have done their utmost to help throughout the investigation. Merseyside police is committed to the protection of all children and will use all methods at their disposal to identify those responsible for abandoning their children

What shame of being a single mom? There's no such thing as shame any more so far as I can see.

Two words, you stupid wench: birth control. (Did any of you notice that this wasn't mentioned at all in the story?) That might keep you from having a third womb turd that you'll then proceed to abandon. Or, better yet, a single word: sterilization.

On the topic, a neighbor's oldest daughter, who has had drug and legal problems since her teen years, has managed to pop out seven children—who have all been taken away from her permanently because of her inability to care for them. The neighbor, a decent woman, has long been disgusted with that daughter and doesn't want her around. (The neighbor ended up adopting one of the first children who was taken from the daughter and raising him. He had serious mental problems from the daughter's drug abuse during pregnancy with him.) My question, which isn't directed at my neighbor but at authorities, is, why haven't you sterilized this wench?

What "shame" in being a single mom? There seems to be no shame left any more!

Two words for this wench: birth control. Note how this story didn't mention it at all. Or, better, one word: sterilization.

Well, look at it this way. At least the kids are now out of the hands of the person who does not want to care for them.

Hopefully they will both find good, loving homes where they will be properly cared for and raised into decent, productive adults.
