The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mirage comic was very dark, gritty, & violent. I have read the first 2 issues. I wish someone would make a television series based strictly on the comic, & perhaps air it on Adult Swim. The 2003 series, that adopts some aspects of the comic, still feels watered down & trying too hard to be hip, from the tidbits I have seen. Anyway, I want to look into the Kickstarter with the former Disney animators. That sounds great, just awesome as hell. I think fucking around with the story lines & editing cartoons & films, so it can be sanitized for the chyldrun, is blasphemous. Its completely disrespectful to the art & the artist. The only exception I would make is if its a different take on an established story, that's an entirely different version, or necessary, well done edits that were an original idea, that couldn't be done in the past, that actually contribute to the story & visuals. I would have given more examples of animated films & cartoons geared toward adults, but I wanted to avoid a wall of text. That just shows how common they really are, ignorant breeders.Quote

The common breeder belief is that animation = for children, and it need not be said how untrue that is. There are PLENTY of older and newer cartoons and animated films aimed at adults, or might at least be disturbing to little kids: South Park, Archer, Drawn Together, as retro lizard mentioned: anything by Ralph Bakshi, some stuff by Don Bluth, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, quite a bit of anime, any hentai/yaoi/yuri/shota/etc., Metalocalypse, Robot Chicken, and anything on Adult Swim or Comedy Central. Those are just the ones I know off the top of my head. Then, when breeders see something in a kiddy-friendly show that they feel is "inappropriate" because they can't go three seconds without bitching about something, they complain about their kids being scarred for life and ruin shit for those who have more than two brain cells.
I definitely agree that breeders just want to sanitize everything into a happy G-rating for their munchkins and expect everyone else to adhere to it. When their brats flip through the channels and find porn, the Moos will bitch at the network and the cable provider rather than blame herself for not using parental controls on the fucking TV. I heard that Nickelodeon's publishing house has re-released the Ninja Turtles comics in graphic novel form and I was considering buying, but from what I understand, the original comics were quite dark and violent. After seeing the new CGI Turtles on Nick in their derpy glory, I can only imagine they've sanitized the rerun comics too. Fuck, I wanted to vomit when I saw how retarded they look now. I don't know if the plot makes up for it or not, as I haven't given it much of a chance. Legend of Korra was on Nick for a while too, but I think the series started to get really dark and now it's only available to view online. But that's Nickelodeon for you. Breeders whine and some networks cater to it. Tons of daytime anime is cleaned up before airing here - even Sailor Moon, because bawww we can't show teh gheys to the chilluns cuz they might think it's okay to be with a same-gendered partner!
I'm not sure about the rating, but there was a Kickstarter campaign a few months ago for a bunch of former Disney animators combining forces to create a cel-animated creepy steampunk film. I think it's definitely aimed at an older crowd, but probably isn't R-rated. They went well over their goal, so I wonder how it's progressing.
