I am really am very happy her sweet littel girls are so smart...really
I never enough thought to compare our kids but apparently she has been.

I say this because the other day i tell her how( my friend) that my sitter's son writes his own name amongst other things( he just turned 3) and how impressed I am and my old friend goes on to say big deal her kids were witing at 3 years of age too, and then proceeded to ask me what I do all day because my 3 year old knows nothing and my 6 year old cant even read yet (ofcourse she breaks the tension with a littel laugh) I didnt get defensive, i just stated the my oldest reads a littel and my youngets doesnt need to nothing at 3 except how to play and that we take more of an unschooling approach.

in that breathe she claims that i am lazy not teaching my children, i explain you cant make a kid learn and she says i should be sitting them down and making them do school work all day (after all I am home all day) She is a nurse works three days a week and is home the rest of the week and her kids do not get home to almost 5 from school and then have other activites, in my opinion she doesnt see her kids enough smart or not. but ofcourse i will keep my opinions to myself... ohwell i am done.. I'm really sick of hearing about all this unschooling shit. In about 15 years the world is going to be teeming with unemployable and utterly useless human beings who can't do anything more productive than eating their own boogers.

Without formal schooling, or at least without children being in the presence of real intellectuals, they will not learn by "osmosis" of being exposed to higher-level thinking in the popular culture.

In other words, they won't develop any interest in fine music, the arts, languages, literature, science--primarily because popular culture is pervasive and the aforementioned topics are aimed at a niche audience. Without any type of catalyst to drive someone into these fields through exposure to them, there's no reason for an individual to explore them. You don't just pick up A Tale of Two Cities at age 35 when you haven't ever read a book in your life. You won't have an interest in learning about astronomy when nobody has ever showed you a telescope before. You may have some interest in popular hip hop on MTV.... but likely won't understand the roots of it, nor will you care to. In short, your brain will be intellectual mush.

"Unschooling" is/will be a potential disaster for an overwhelming portion of the population.

One's pushing the children too hard, and the other is functionally illiterate herself, judging by the writing. Merge them and you might get one decent mother out of them, with a lot left over.

i just stated the my oldest reads a littel

First off, saying reads a littel is not a good sign. Even my Google's Chrome spell checker is saying WTF?

I'm also wondering what can that 6 year old actually read? Twinkie, Hostess, cup cake, Pepsi, Coke, etc.? How about math?

What is 1+1? "I don't know".
How much do two 99 cents Whoppers cost? "2 dollars with 2 pennies left over!"

I've gotta admit that I was homeschooled, and badly.
I was left with a library card and told to get on with it- no lessons, or learning plans, nothing but my own desire to learn and read everything I could.

Still, I am intelligent enough to function, which is more than I can say for a lot of my age group.

It has left me with socialisation problems rather than learning ones, but I do realise I was lucky not to have both.
I am left unqualified, and with no experience of the academic way of learning, essay writing etc. which makes it difficult for me to get qualified in any way.

My point, I suppose, is that they are being unfair on their kids, no question, but if they want to learn they will.

Think about it. Homeschooling means they'll never know more than your average mommies do.

Fucking disaster for society.

There are some home schooled kyds in my family. And they are the biggest dolts in the making. Home schooling is great for moos concerned that their offspring are not as intelligent as their peers. Rather than facing the shame of having "slow" kids, and actually trying to do something about it, these moos prefer the non-competitive route of home schooling. worst.mistake.ever...

In years past, parents who homeschooled had to have a degree of some sort and fill out an application and be "accepted" by the state board of education to be qualified to teach their children at home. When did this change? This was a "rule" as recently as the early 1980's in the state of Alabama, USA, which isn't exactly known as the education mecca of the country. It is ABSURD that any state board of education would even allow this bullshit! It probably started out with religious fundamentalists demanding to "teach" their kids at home and then just got out of control from that point. This moo who's quoted above clearly has no business "teaching" a puppy how to use a newspaper, much less any children how to read or write. confused smiley

If YOU are the "exception" to what I am saying, then why does my commentary bother you so much?

My aunt who home schooled my cousin has a degree in education. I'm wondering how it was accepted, and ok, for those who don't have degrees, and illiterate, have any business teaching their kids.

Her "sitter's" son? Did she mean "sister",maybe? What in the hell does she need a sitter for, if she's home all day?

I couldn't help myself. I did a search and found some of her other posts. The one about her 3 year old not being able to shit for two years was kind of entertaining.

Also, she must have has a ghostwriter for her previous posts, because they sound much more coherent than this one.

Anymore, only the dumbest Moos are home-schooling and un-schooling their brats because baaawwww real school has too many rules that conflict with Moo's non-discipline techniques and stifle Junior's creativity!

Kids need to go to school, and not just for education in various subjects. They need to go to learn about authority (since there's none at home), they need to learn the difference between work time and play time (since it's all play time 24/7 back at the barn), they need to learn how to socialize (they never meet anyone but Mommy), and they need to learn how to solve issues with their peers on their own in the event of minor disagreements (whereas at home, Mommy comes rushing in to put a Bandaid on everything and make it all okay).

These dumb swine have no business whatsoever educating their children...not that real school is much better these days, but at least it's a bit more useful than what Moo can do. Holy hell, this woman can't even fucking write a sentence or spell...yes, sometimes teachers may misspell a word occasionally, but if you can't spell "little," then there's a big, big problem. Allowing a retard to be in charge of the education of another person will just result in another retard who doesn't know how to talk to people, form relationships (platonic, professional, or romantic), behave appropriately, or do what they're told by a boss. The result? Welfare leech who will breed like a rabbit, and who will produce more little unemployable, worthless retards.

I'm somewhat torn on the issue of homeschooling. I read stories like this that make me want to say it shouldn't be allowed, then I talk to my husband who earns part of his living due to homeschooling.

He has a master's degree in mathematics and teaches part time in an online high school. He gets many students who were basically bullied out of both public and private schools and neither the school administrators or the parents would do anything about it. He also gets some religious zealots who don't want their kids learning things they don't agree with. There are also parents who think the schools are just dumbed down so much their kids were bored and not learning anything. The kids he deals with are all across the spectrum in terms of ability and the things they all have in common are the parents are actually interested in their educations, even the religious nutcases, and they actually appreciate the fact he is there to provide them an alternative to regular school. He has also said that there's no real defining factor, other than how hard they work, that determines how well they do. Even some of the children of religious extremists who want to isolate their kids from the evil outside world have pulled straight A's, while some supposedly gifted kids with high test scores are mediocre to say the least.

The example cited at the beginning of this thread is a definite no, but the examples my husband has seen say some home schooling parents have valid reasons for wanting to take this option. I think if parents want to home school, there should be some sort of minimum standards, like requiring the kids to be tested regularly to see if they are at the appropriate level, or at least having some sort of basic curriculum to be followed.

Those who advocate home schooling didn't have people like this nutcase in mind.
