The school had filtering software on it's computer. The article says there was a flaw in the software due to an update. Even so, you don't accidentally find porn on the internet. You are either looking for it, or looking for something related that would bring up porn results. Notice the kyds also passed the porn around to classmates. So, my guess is they knew exactly what they were looking for.

Lake Stevens, WA - Two third graders from Sunnycrest Elementary School in Lake Stevens were suspended for viewing and sharing explicit pornographic images with other students on their school supplied laptops while in class, says Lake Stevens school district spokeswoman Jamie Taylor.

The district is standing by its disciplinary action, even though an issue with internet filtering software allowed the images to be looked up on the school computers, because the two students did not alert their teacher.

In a letter that went out to parents Tuesday afternoon following inquiries by KING 5 News, the district said it, "...subscribes to a filtering software that blocks certain "classifications" for all users, including: pornography; gambling; obscenities; adult content; hate/violence; and URL shorteners. In this instance, the images were searchable and visible due to a change in the search engine that had not been updated by the filtering software company."

But Austin Maxwell, the stepfather of one of the students, says because his daughter was only eight years old she had no idea what she was looking at and wouldn't know what to look for.

"This is not a child you would expect would ever be doing anything like this," said Maxwell saying he found no evidence his daughter was looking at any illicit images at home. "So I came home and checked the history and at home there's nothing on there."

He said his daughter was upset after seeing the images and only loaded certain words into the search engine on her school computer on the urging of another student not knowing what they were. Maxwell also said the family's computers are equipped with parental locks.

Why do third graders need laptops?

Back in my day, at that age, we weren't even allowed PENS.

Nor even to bring colored chalk - we might graffito the surrounding pavement yanno.

Right around this age I was put into a private school for the advanced (what is now called "gifted".) And while that was more 'open minded' - intellectually, anyway, it was even MOAR STRICT.

NO FOOLING AROUND!

Any computer related stuff would've had to do with the basic nuts and bolts or - Hey Hey! Kids! FORTRAN!!!

OUCH!

I had serious work burnout by the age of 10.

.
It's because they think by starting them early on computers, they think they are somehow making them 'tech savvy.' Even though many students already know, and spend too much time staring at a screen anyway. It's not the magic solution those starry eyed folks think it is, because the students are falling farther and farther behind in science and math and reading.

If they taught math, reading, and reading comprehension offline, maybe the students would do better. But nowadays the fad is thinking technology will magically solve everything.

Pushing buttons =/= understanding things.

Haha, I did. tongue sticking out smiley But I was naive about sex as a freshman. When I was in ninth grade, the school computers had absolutely no filters. During my computer class, I decided to take advantage of the fast internet and look for info on the band Orgy. Mind you, I had no idea that the band's name was a sexual term and I went to orgy.com. Well, it sure wasn't the orgy I had in mind and I noped outta there. Oops! Never got in any trouble for it.

Fast forward three years and the fucking filters are more sensitive than a freshly-circumcised dick. I was looking for sound effects for an animation I was making, and every fucking site I clicked on was blocked because it allegedly contained material about smoking, drinking, gambling, sex, or drugs. Then I lost my internet access from visiting too many banned sites. I had to explain to the tech guy, my loon mother and the principal that I wasn't looking for anything relating to tobacco or sex or drugs and I just wanted some silly noises, so please let me have my internet access back now so I can finish my shit.

But yeah, I seriously doubt these kids just happened to find porn, especially if said porn was making its rounds among classmates. I bet a bunch of boys told this girl to search "blue waffle" or something similar.

The school has to update its filters now and then, and sometimes shit like this falls through the cracks. It happens. It's not the school's fault a bunch of dumbass eight-year-olds "accidentally" found porn during a time when the web filters just happened to be down and shared it with everyone. The upside is the glitch was made known and could be fixed, but I still fail to see how it's the school's fault that two idiot kids chose to look for porn during class.

I'm amazed the school suspended the little pervs. I thought punishing a kid in any way would mentally scar them for life and stifle their creativity. smile rolling left righteyes2

Parunts blame schools for everything! It is always someone else's fault.

I used to look up porn in high school got me a Saturday detention almost got expelled but for some reason was not, this was in a private high school all girls school and they didn't have any special filters on their computers until I looked at porn because they never thought girls would look up porn. the only reason I did it look up is because my parents wernt cool with anything related to sexual stuff so I couldnt them questions and I couldn't access any sort of materials or privacy time for myself ,so I took too looking it up at school after I made a spelling mistake looking for a news website that ended up sending me directly to a porn site at the time which I thought was very interesting, look it up again and the only reason I got caught on it, was because the girl beside me couldn't contain her giggles at the images that she saw on my screen, if it hadn't been for her, i would have continued to look it up and the school would have gone without having any sort of filter on the Internet.

But boy did they install some strict ass filter after that, couldn't access anything on any computer for almost a year without having the teacher input an approval code, and that wasn't just for me, any student had to ask.

I'm pretty sure I was around 13-14yrs old, but I got my hands on a soft core porn comic book when I was a bit younger, so no, I fully believe that kids of 8yrs can know exactly what there looking at once they've found something sex related, especially kids of today who seem to be physically maturing earlier by almost 5 years for girls 3 years for boys younger than me of the 80's
