Lake Stevens, WA - Two third graders from Sunnycrest Elementary School in Lake Stevens were suspended for viewing and sharing explicit pornographic images with other students on their school supplied laptops while in class, says Lake Stevens school district spokeswoman Jamie Taylor.
The district is standing by its disciplinary action, even though an issue with internet filtering software allowed the images to be looked up on the school computers, because the two students did not alert their teacher.
In a letter that went out to parents Tuesday afternoon following inquiries by KING 5 News, the district said it, "...subscribes to a filtering software that blocks certain "classifications" for all users, including: pornography; gambling; obscenities; adult content; hate/violence; and URL shorteners. In this instance, the images were searchable and visible due to a change in the search engine that had not been updated by the filtering software company."
But Austin Maxwell, the stepfather of one of the students, says because his daughter was only eight years old she had no idea what she was looking at and wouldn't know what to look for.
"This is not a child you would expect would ever be doing anything like this," said Maxwell saying he found no evidence his daughter was looking at any illicit images at home. "So I came home and checked the history and at home there's nothing on there."
He said his daughter was upset after seeing the images and only loaded certain words into the search engine on her school computer on the urging of another student not knowing what they were. Maxwell also said the family's computers are equipped with parental locks.

It's because they think by starting them early on computers, they think they are somehow making them 'tech savvy.' Even though many students already know, and spend too much time staring at a screen anyway. It's not the magic solution those starry eyed folks think it is, because the students are falling farther and farther behind in science and math and reading.Quote

If they taught math, reading, and reading comprehension offline, maybe the students would do better. But nowadays the fad is thinking technology will magically solve everything.

Even so, you don't accidentally find porn on the internet. You are either looking for it, or looking for something related that would bring up porn results.
