in this world of freedom to travel when and where, you have to have some controls, or well you get a completely chaotic system. yes it is sad, but why dont those illegals try to fix their own countries.. then they wouldnt need to come.. its may be harder but its infinitely more rewarding.
i am a pessimist too, but my pessimism is never as bad as the reality i see. if everyone criminals, terrorists, people with bird flu or whatever come in.. thats a threat to your way of life.. if they allowed people with TB into the country, they could infect others look at the zombie and other end of the world films, yes these are extreme cases.. but it can happen.. without adequate controls on who come in or not.. life will be so much worse for everyone.

Thirteen cases of plague including two deaths have been reported in the western United States this year, the highest number of cases in 12 years, health officials said Friday.
Seven cases were reported in New Mexico, three in Colorado, two in California and one in Texas, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Two New Mexicans died _ a 54-year-old woman who grew ill in May and a 43-year-old woman who became sick in July.
On average, about seven people a year are diagnosed with plague, CDC officials said. Fourteen cases were reported in 1994. **

Update: Illegal Immigrants May be Bringing Tuberculosis Into U.S.
Government officials believe illegal immigrants are responsible for spreading tuberculosis to the U.S. Most illegal immigrants come from countries where health care is inadequate, and/or the immigrants lived in poor areas where they do not or can not seek proper health care. This puts them at risk for developing and dying from curable diseases, such as tuberculosis.
Recently, 40 Cuban immigrants were detained in Brownsville, Texas, when they told U.S. Customs agents they had tuberculosis. Even if just one of the forty immigrants tests positive for tuberculosis, they are all at risk for developing the disease.
All forty Cuban immigrants are scheduled for tuberculosis testing. If they test negative, they will be released. If they test positive, they will be "held in quarantine at the Bayview Detention Center". Read full article...

Malaria cases reported to the Minnesota Department of Health increased from 5 in 1988 to 76 in 1998, paralleling the number of immigrants to Minnesota. In 20% of cases, the Plasmodium species was not identified; 44% of cases were hospitalized. The public health community needs to reevaluate current recommendations for refugee screening, provider and patient education, and laboratory capacity.

these are not just the only reasons, there are many others when you need to control who comes in.. by all means become a citizen. but illegals have no controls, if they kill someone, they may be deported, or put in prison, or they may run.. you just dont know who you are letting in, in the case of illegals
in an ideal world.. ok.. but this isnt an ideal world. and we have to live in it.
if anyone can come in, they can be anyone at all and have their own particular problems, which directly affects you. and everyone around you.. not just medically, but financially, emotionally, physically..
should we allow anyone into our countries.. and let god sort them out.. or should we only allow those in who want to be part of the country, make immgration laws easier, yes.. but dont let illegals cross with no controls at all. give the immigrants a full medical check up.. but make sure you know who you are letting in..

H.L.Mencken wrote:"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.â€
